You can use a plastic pot in a ceramic one, but you shouldn't have a pool of water in the bottom. Just give it a little every now and then. I recently left a succulent in the bathroom for a few weeks and it got too much water and started dropping leaves everywhere. I had to prune it right back to a third of its previous size. Wolly.
