It's in a plastic pot inside a ceramic pot, I was lifting the plant out and putting water in the bottom which was working well, I think.

Maybe it needs replanting, the soil feels pretty compact

So there was a pool of water in the bottom of the ceramic pot? Sounds like the plant could be getting way too much water - what is it?
