Specifically, I owned a Kona JtS for about 4 years and it did just fine as a pretend road bike, light tourer, tow path messing-about-by-boats bike and even TT bike for hilly events. As a road bike, it's obviously a long way off being as nice as a similar spec proper road bike, being quite flexy due to the skinny and long chainstays, but as one bike to do it all CX bikes in general (the ones that aren't full-on race tools, at least) and the Kona JtS in particular are hard to beat.
