a) hope you don't put the rest of your cycling gear in with fabric condittioner. Won't last very long if you do
b) Somewhere on this forum (possibly the jacket thread) there's a link to an article that proves that washing waterproof fabrics with fabric conditioner actually renews the proofing. It goes against everything I've been told previously but it was a convincing article.
Fabric conditioner will ruin anything designed wick sweat away and once it's on, it's never coming off and your base layer / jesrsey / merino pants or whatever are ruined.
I have read the research into using fabric softener as a reproofer (Comfort Pure was used) and it does indeed work. However, it is pretty vague on how it affects breathability and longevity of the garment.
