Throwing this open to the hive mind as, after a fair bit of googlage I'm still unsure.
I need to write a sentence along these lines:
a range of tissues is examined and observations recorded a range of tissues are examined and observations recorded
Is or Are?
Is the range the subject, making it singular? Are the tissues the subject, pluralizing my ass?
I'm not studying kleenex by the way, I know what I'm gonna find in that.
