  • And your sense of humour is intact. Also good. :)

  • got the rossin

and... managed to pick up another damaged frame. stupidly i picked this one up in person and was so excited about the good deal that i didn't check it properly.

it goes 3/4 of the way round.

It's ridiculous light (as far as my experience goes of lightness) plus the welds and finish are alot nicer than the rossin evolutions i could find from google. plus i recieved the china fork i was gonna stick in it too, so I'm gonna try and get it repaired, the seller said he would take the bill.. obviously it is easier to sell a frame as undamaged then foot the bill than to sell a damaged frame. big PITA, and i feel like a fool.

it'll probably end up getting taped up and used as a sleeper tarmac eating machine... i hope

  • can that be repaired?

  • Alu? doubt it would be worth it....

  • I'm waiting on an email from a frame builder who knows a frame builder... of aluminium.. I hope that "alu is not worth repairing" is a big myth. 7000 series doesn't seem like such a bitch to repair either but this is just google reading.. but if enough people tell me that this isn't worth it then I'll probably send it back and get my money.

  • I was just thinking about the affect on the heat treating in what I imagine is quite a high stressed location on the frame...

thats an easy repair, just needs tig welding

  • Is it not the case that the alloys commonly used for bicycle frames need solution heat treatment after welding?

  • ^^knows what he's talking about

  • welll...

"From the website: The alloy 7000, used by Columbus for the tube sets Metal Altec2 Plus, Zonal and Airplane, is defined as self-tempering: it is air-hardened. This means that in the areas overheated by the welding the supersaturated structure is restored, which, owing to the natural ageing (which takes place at ambient temperature), allows for a 75% recovery of the initial properties after a lapse of time of about 3 weeks. Nevertheless, Columbus advises to carry out a precipitation hardening treatment in the oven in order to give the structure a bigger homogeneity of the precipitates, with consequent improvement of the fatigue behaviour of the frame."

(This is a quote of a quote)

its altec2. so im guessing solution heat treating isn't needed, but sticking it in the oven for a bit is recommended. however i definitely dont know what im talking about.

edit: I don't think anyone here will really know what they're talking about with this and I'll wait for the guy who works with aluminium to tell me what he thinks. i find it strange how noone seems to have any experience of getting an aluminium frame repaired though.

ive repaired loads like this you can either gas weld it or tig it,the crack isnt in the middle of a tube its on the end where you can filler rod it into the drop out.

  • how much would you charge for something like that?

  • £50-80 is what I'd expect. I'd expect the crack to be filed out then welded back up. No way to guarantee a good join without dong so.

  • Quick question regarding hubs: I have an old mtb frame that I'm going to build up as a tourer for the summer. It's 130 o.l.d and I was going to use an old stx 7 speed hub, but thinking about it, is there any reason I couldn't use a 130 wide road hub and go 8 speed, and is there any other reasons for going one way or the other (durability / sealing etc.)

I think both should work but just looking for your expert opinions.

    great turn of phrase BTW.

There is more dish on an 8-speed hub than a 7-speed hub, due to the wider cassette. That makes for a slightly weaker wheel.

Also, some one correct me if I'm wrong, but mtb rear hubs have an O.L.D of 135mm, while road hubs are 130mm.

Good point, I guess maybe the 7 speed stx hub I saw might be best for the job then.

MTB spacing was 130 once long ago. It's a very old frame (for an MTB).

  • from this
    .

    via this

    to this

  • why?

    practice?
    fun?
if I had the tools and know-how, I'd be butchering old frames all day

    yes for practice :)

in indonesia, all people want to make frame from popular builder ,
like NJS or carbon frame , but not for me.

if you have info about where to buy chromoly tubing please tell me.
i cant find in indonesia .

    ceeways

  • I'm liking this, very practical. My only change would be to take the inner ring off if you're not using it & put the rack back on.

    thx :)

that will happen, when I get some shorter chain ring bolts, and get round to cleaning up the rack.
also will be fitted with child seat again some point soon.
loving be able to jump up and off things at speed again, brightens up the commute.

the other thing i need to do is change the position of the front brake blocks, new they were a bit close to the tires but could smell burning rubber when i slowed down on the way home last night!

Agreed on the inner rings. Looks like it'd be a nice ride.
I'm a fan of stripped down MTB commuters and love the GT triple frames of old.

How do you find the chain tensioner Nickel? Took me ages to get it working, couldn't use standard shifting chainring, had to use single specific, and chain kept skipping till in the end found a ring and sprocket combo with tight enough chain so didn't have to use tensioner.
