oh hai! Though I wouldn't have called what you do advertising - Or maybe I've just completely misinterpreted what it is that you do :)^^ the past 18 years, why?
I'll be a bit more specific - TV advertising (or any platform so long as it has video production at the core)
I'm in my mid twenties - have spent several years doing current affairs, news and other factual stuff for TV - starting as a runner, working my way up to producing reports and location producing some fairly big docs.
It's lovely and I'm lucky to have done it, but I'm not sure it's really me. #FirstWorldProblems
In October I left my job as a staff producer to indulge in some time being self employed.
I got a gig doing some writing almost immediately which is very lucrative by my previous standards but very time intensive and doesn't leave room for any other clients in the mean time until it runs out (It in theory gets renewed every three months so at the end of this month I can choose to do another three or walk away)
I've been thinking about just living off the money I make doing this writing gig which would last me a long time if I'm careful and building up some sort of contacts base and portfolio in the creative/production side of advertising and if I can get any paid work while I'm at it, fabulous.
But I have no idea how to go about this. Not having studied the more theoretical aspects like behavioural economics in any depth, my main understanding comes from scouring the internet looking for examples of work that I like and from bookmarking the IPA site.
So I'd be very grateful for any tips, pointers, sites, books, etc that anyone cared to throw out there. Or type here v

I hope to work in advertising eventually. Studying it now. done a few internships. doing loads of d&ad briefs this year and the one show ones for the nyc creative week.
Anyone wanna give me a job in the future?

I think all the people off the forum should start our own agency. can you imagine the kind of stuff we would all come up with?
it scares me thinking about it

I have a couple of basic IPA qualifications but if you're talking about production / creation of advertising then i'm out. I just spend the money etc $$$
-
• #66
How do you get the ipa qualifications?
Im currently studying BA creative advertising. are industry people going to take that qualification seriously do you think?
-
• #67
Presuming that depends on the role? ^
-

You can visit the IPA website and sign up for the CPD program on there....
I work on the media side and the qualifications aren't taken tremendously seriously (although having some is obviously better than nothing!!) but I can imagine that they are taken much more seriously on the creative agency side.

Ahh. i want to work as a creative/art director in a kind of more classical agency. not so much focused on digital stuff and more print, tv, radio. are there many agencies around like that any more?
-
• #70
CHI, Saatchi etc are still very classical. Trying to get them not to pitch a TV ad to the client is like pulling teeth.
-
• #71
^ worth pointing out that this is my opinion from the outside... might be worth having someone from the creative sides opinion as well!!
-
• #72
I like print ads and radio. obviously the whole money side of it restricts what some people do also

Guys, as young thrusters you shock me. In terms of advertising that is. Why would you want to be in certain types of media? It's about ideas not media platforms. Besides digital and outdoor digital Adshels posters etc. etc. are exploding and have been for the past 5 years, traditional print and other traditional platforms are shrinking in comparison in terms of media spend. Don't get me wrong I'm not a media bod have just worked as a creative director for many years (last 6 Publicis and Ogilvy) so have good knowledge about these things.
And it is all about ideas. Ever heard of The School of Communication Arts? Check it out. At the risk of sounding like an old groomer I'm happy to pass on industry advice at some forum meet like souths drinks for example. PM me if you'd like to arrange, in case you're wondering about credentials have won D&ADs plus Cream plus Campaign Digital Gold etc. etc. yes appearances can be deceptive.
