Well done adroit!
@ mv I know what you mean about paying loads for crap drinks, it seems totally unreasonable. Last time I stopped for 2 weeks my boss refused to buy me a second drink that wasn't alcoholic because the first was £2.50 for a tiny coke.
As for socializing, I find the main problem is when you're in slightly average nights out. When everyone's on form and the venue has a good vibe, I can have just as good a time without alcohol*. But when it's a slightly meh Apt bar after work, who's only selling point is a happy hour and loads of people...well it's just a bit hard, because you realize the sad fact that often you are only there because of alcohol.
- even with everyone being weird about me not drinking.

I come off the drink for Januaries these days and agree that finding alternative beverages is a challenge.
OJ and tonic is an old favourite.
My newest discovery is Rochester Ginger which really does kick like two angry mules. It feels a bit like having a glug of whiskey. Not many pubs have it mind. I am considering a hip flask approach - adding it to lime cordial and soda with a slice of lime makes a pretty good imitation Moscow Mule.
Anyone else got any suggestions?

pints of fruit juice and soda water is my pub standard
apple juice and soda can look like cider

Alot of empty calories though if you're trying to keep an eye on that kind of thing...

Angostura bitters in mineral water!
Also Elderflower cordial in sparkling water is very nice, it is what I drank mostly over Christmas
But Rochester Ginger is a fave of mine too, a bit of a well kept secret! -

I don't drink mid-week, after a couple of decades of drinking every day. I've stopped for about six months now, but still like a good drink of a weekend.
A good drink is plain old tonic with ice and slice, or even swapping the lemon with cucumber. Dresses it up a bit, makes it feel like a proper drinky poos.

No booze or sugar till the end of february. Here we go...
no sugar- thats hardcore, surely if you give up the booze a bit of choc is good for you?
I gave up alcohol a year ago today.
Feel like celebrating, but that is a bit awkward
I surprised myself by sleeping tons better, and I love mornings now though. Doubt I will ever go back, but I keep saying to myself if i get really old and crotchety I will take up drinking and smoking!nice one Ade! inner power mate-

I'm doing this for Jan. Sun - Thurs off the booze, Fri & Sat on. Hopefully an easy way to lose a bit of the Xmas weight gain.
I did a totally dry Jan a couple of years ago and hated it. Jan suddenly seemed to go on forever and is shit enough with booze.

Because people wanted ideas for nice non alcohol drinks, and as far as the dry January theory is concerned...
discuss!

you veggies and your obsession with green stuff! You can't just chop up a couple of sprouts and wang them in a glass with some water and call it a drink!

Asking for a meat cocktail might lead to a few unpleasant surprises though.
I would imagine it's the type of drink they have at Norths, Easts or Wests.

Just discovered this thread.
So, here goes, over 7 years of continuous sobriety for me. The bestest most kind and loving thing I've ever done for me and the people in my life. I live an love life sober.
Each to their own of course.

Just read that guardian link up there and think they are missing the point. Yes, I would love it if a month off the sauce fixed my liver, but what is more rewarding to me is to demonstrate to myself that I can live without alcohol and still have an enjoyable life.
I find it easier and more productive to do this in a month long cold turkey than a couple of days every week. Meh.

Was going to lay off the grog for a month but I've got a very good bottle of red, a very good bottle of white, a vintage Champagne, three bottles of Dissorono, a bottle of 10 year old port and some fake Baileys burning a hole in my drinks cabinet. OH WELL.

It would be my pleasure, don't bother shaving either.
I'm a bit of a one for going for the extremes, I've been tee-total for a few quite long periods in my life, over both my 19th and 21st birthdays I was off it and loved being off it but I've also been on it and been on it to the point where friends and family were proper worried about me. (possibly because of the other things I was doing when I was drunk).
Nowadays I really can't be arsed with the getting drunk part of drinking, like, I really just don't see the point/attraction of it but I actually
likelove a lot of alchoholic drinks, Belgian beers for example and I also hate drinking £2 cans of coke or watery gunned soft drinks when I'm out so I sometimes find it difficult to stay off the booze just because it's the nicer option.
