Bad experiences with Garmin seem to be isolated examples, lots of us have had good service.
There are two basic types; enclosed cam and open cam. The enclosed cam ones, i.e. what you get with Shimano/Campag wheels and hubs, are much better functioning, but heavy. The open cam ones are cheap to set up manufacturing, so everybody and his dog has had a go. None of them work as well as OE Shimano ones, but some are worse than others. For a road bike, you put up with some slightly fiddly action every time you take a wheel off in exchange for up to 160g/pr weight saving. Don't even think about it for anything with disc brakes.
