Kryptonite new york fahgettaboudit u-lock disaster

I think someone had their bike cut off by firemen, but not sure if that's a good use of their time etc. Maybe the council can cut it off for you?

I guess locks come with a 12 month warranty like anything else, and they will probably claim that you didn't maintain the lock well enough (they need oiling now and then to keep them smooth). Also, it sounds like someone might have had a go at nicking your bike but failed, so perhaps the lock did you a favour by failing before it disengaged? Either way, I'd have a chat with Kryptonite in a public way (Facebook / Twitter) and see what they feel like doing when you get your bike cut off. Might even be worth filming the cutting so they can put it on their marketing page.

Nothing beats the kryptonite fag for locking up in london I'd say. You can't fit a bottle jack in it, it's 18mm thick, and it would appear the customer service is very good. There's even a kryptonite employee who regularly posts in the locks thread when people have a problem with them.

The locksmith hasn't removed it as of yet.
My bike is at work and as I had this afternoon off I did not want to hang out at work.
Hopefully he'll be able to do it Sunday when I'm at work.

Will try to video the magic as it happens.

That's not the first story I've seen on here about Kryptonite willing to pay for a faulty lock.

3 Years ago I bought an Abus Granit, 2 months later the key snapped in the lock, Abus refused to have anything to do with it, I lost £90 on a locksmith to cut it off. (somewhere on here there is a very old thread about it I believe)

Bought Kryptonite ever since and never had any issue.

Kryptonite crappy locks I would never buy them.

I had one for about 20 years the only problem with it was the key would fit any similar kryptonite type lock fortunately thieves did not catch on to that. The came the star key locks the thieves did catch on to those all you needed was a bic biro to open then their lock mechanism has always been crap.

Another crap lock is those folding ones did a test one of those recently it snapped really easily.

Yes it is a bottle jack they use not a foldy car jack also a scaffold pole works very well I caught a bloke doing it about 18 months ago he had the cheek to say did I want him to fuck my sister hmm nice piece of work.

As an update to this I got an email from Kryptonite customer service this morning.

They are willing to pay for a locksmith to cut the lock off and to replace it.

Excellent customer service; and why people swear by the best of Kryptonite's products.

I know my response is harsh, but such scaremongering and misinformation needs to be firmly nipped in the bud.

They may well have had some issues back in the stone age but I'll buy Kryptonite every time. The missus and I have three. We use the motorcycle chain-type lock to secure her "station bike" to the railings outside the flat and she uses a New York for the station. I have a fahg and swear by it. If it's getting a bit sticky (you'll know when) then just fill the holes with a spray lube and it will cease to be sticky.

I'd never lock my bike to a bus.

those videos are so pointless, that lock is a piece of spaghetti, i would expect nothing less!

Exactly, it probably took his friend that works in the bike shop less than 10 seconds to cut it off with a much more widely available tool anyway so the fact that someone who I expect has lock picking experience can do it in a minute is neither here nor there.

Update; locksmith came and went.

Despite being told what the lock was and how it needed to be taken off he arrived with a drill and confidently declared he would remove it without any trouble.

30 mins, 3 battery packs and multiple drill bits later he has left and the lock is still intact.
Someone else is coming with an angle grinder.

This is not how I envisaged spending my bank holiday.

Thankfully kryptonite are paying for those "locksmiths".

I think they've salvaged the situation pretty well but the fact is the barrel failed - seemingly without warning. I suppose the weather may have been a factor and it may have been an idea to put some lube in the lock some time ago.

I have one but it's probably overkill considering the bits of thread people use to lock their bikes around here and I'm more concerned with something like this happening than it being cut and my bike being robbed.

Have to agree with hippy, they've dealt with the situation very well. A***+++++++++ as those ebay bots might say, leaves me comfortable in the knowledge that if anything goes wrong with 1 of the 4 kryptonites in the household, things will be sorted.

One of my Kryptos has been out in the weather for ages. It's a bit tight (ooh nurse) but still works fine. Every company can make manufacturing mistakes and if this was a common problem I'm sure we'd hear a lot more about it. Is it possible that someone actually had a go at attacking the lock barrel and that's why it failed?

I think its safe to say that I largely disagree with you (and the genius that is Zebra Cyclist). Kryptonite have the best reputation in cycle locking, and especially after they repaired the problems with their locks years ago. They have worked hard to get back to the top, and they have earned it.

We know you are either riding your bicycle around town, cruising down the highway on your steel steed or bombing around down some trails where your lock could pick up all kinds of grime. Lubing on a monthly basis should keep dust and grime in check and out of your cylinder. Lube ingredients need to include one of the following: Silicone, Graphite, Teflon or Paraffin. These are commonly found in bike or powersports shops. Spray or drip a few drops of lube into the cylinder, insert the key and make a few turns to work it in. You should be good to go so you can get back to your adventure.

I've never done any maintenance to any of my Kryptos.

Just as a follow up to this I feel compelled to post here to compliment the Kryptonite customer service in relation to this incident.
Within a few hours of emailing their US customer service dept they replied to me and agreed to pay for a locksmith to remove the lock and to replace the broken lock.
Within 3 days of returning the lock to their UK dept I had a new lock couriered out to me and a cheque covering locksmith costs and postage.

If only every company was this easy to deal with.
