I don't think it will ever go straight to .txt because the Production work will already have been done. If anything, more interactivity will be introduced.
It will be a sad day if/when books go straight to device rather than printed first.
I'm bemused by the fact that you couldn't give a hoot about Publishing. Unless you mean the conglomerate fiction / celeb bio Publishers?

I should point out that this is my profession so I would be bias.
A lot of people are anti-kindle and I suppose I should be worried about the advent of the electronic reader in this age-old profession that I'm passionate about. But e-readers encourage reading and that can only be a good thing.
I bought a book on Quantum Physics which I probably wouldn't have otherwise.
