Kryptonite new york fahgettaboudit u-lock disaster

Hi guys,

Hopefully one of you may be able to help me out.
Leaving work this evening in the pouring rain and in full cycling gear including cleats I discovered that my Kryptonite big-ass lock has broken.
Broken in the sense that my bike is still there and locked but the lock is inoperable.
I put the key in the lock and it turns with no resistance at all, like zero resistance.
Much less than normally encountered in opening a lock.
My other Kryptonite keys do not turn the lock, but the right key just spins around completely freely without any sign of the lock mechanism opening.

Firstly, does anyone have any idea if there is something simple I can do to make this better?

Secondly, presuming the mechanism is f**ked any advise on how to cut this bad boy off?

Thirdly, any idea what sort of come back I can get from Kryptonite. I know they offer compensation if the lock is broken and your bicycle stolen, but not sure how it works if I need to pay someone to destroy the lock to get my bike back.

Most annoying, 4 mile walk home in the rain in cleats.
Grrrrrr.

I seem to recall hearing most u-locks are cracked with a car-jack? Just get it in between the lock bar and the apex of the "u" and start winding. As for what to expect - no idea... shrapnel maybe?

If its the fahgeddaboutit mini new york jobby - expect to be stood with an angle grinder for a long, long time...

is it possible someone has tried to break the lock/drill the lock?

was there any visible damage to the lock?

Is it a nice bike/is it a bad area?

My first concern would be leaving the bike overnight.... but maybe I'm just paranoid.

Lubing it, and giving it a bit of a whack got it to engage again and the key was able to operate the tumblers.

Good how-to for thieves...

No evidence of tempering with the lock.

It's also locked way too securely to get a car jack into it, it's super tight between the rack and the wheel.

It is the faghhadaboutit New York lock, not even the mini, 18mm of hardened steel.

Will try it tomorrow with WD40 and see if I get any joy.

It should hopefully be okay overnight, fingers crossed, it is my road bike so hopefully nobody quick releases all the bits.

Now i understand why people go homicide.

i may have totally made this up - but i swear i read on here that you should use olive oil instead of wd40 etc...can't remember why, but im sure i read that.

^^^ that jack in the video is pretty useless on a decent lock ,compared to the bottle jack.

It seems that an angle grinder may be the only fast option.

after some googling - apparantly you should use wd40 to clean it out, then use a greasey oil such as olive oil or vaseline so the mechanism is sticky, but oily.

lube locks using a graphite puffer. BITD

Damn of all locks to malfunction, thats the last one you want it to be! To cut that lock I would imagine you're going to need an angle grinder, bolt cutters are not your friend with an 18mm lock.

Where is work? I have a grinder and 1mm discs for cutting inox. Can you run power out from work? How long a lead do you need? I think I can cobble up 35m. Have you used a grinder before? What is the frame/bits that are locked made of? Don't want to hurt your pride and joy!

I'm back in town tomorrow afternoon, PM me. Perhaps call Kryptonite customer service in the meantime and ask them about a replacement.

I had one for about 20 years the only problem with it was the key would fit any similar kryptonite type lock fortunately thieves did not catch on to that. The came the star key locks the thieves did catch on to those all you needed was a bic biro to open then their lock mechanism has always been crap.

Another crap lock is those folding ones did a test one of those recently it snapped really easily.

Yes it is a bottle jack they use not a foldy car jack also a scaffold pole works very well I caught a bloke doing it about 18 months ago he had the cheek to say did I want him to fuck my sister hmm nice piece of work.

This is no longer an issue.

They're still rubbish over weighted and over rated locks Abus are much better made and those round ones they have just brought out are magic.

Is this personsl opinion or science fact?

If it's science fact could you please put up a link? I'd like to see how much better Abus are as I need a new lock.

As an update to this I got an email from Kryptonite customer service this morning.

They are willing to pay for a locksmith to cut the lock off and to replace it.
