I don't think the slippiness is that bad actually... Although it may be worse on indoor courts like Cambridge. And also it's when you are most at the edge of balance that it would be worst.
If you can't afford new shoes but can get mtb cleats on then I wouldn't say you were mental.
Also if you wait till January all the 2011 stuff will be well cheap, I got my (admittedly very clunky and heavy) spd shoes in January for about £25.
But if you can afford to own two pairs of shoes do it... It's the same rule as bikes...
