I think they're contacts for some method of docking the phone.
It is a good phone. I've moved from an iphone (admittedly a very slow 3gs) and it is superior in every respect.
The only thing that I've found would useful is a quicker way to stop the screen rotating (i imagine there's a widget for this somewhere though).
