  • On the other hand, some people have raised questions about the sealing of the RSP/Smart lights

may reconsider the smart rear light option

  • may reconsider the smart rear light option

I've seen comments about the seal on that particular RSP/Smart case design (the one in the jejames package etc), not Smart in general.

  • the lack of side light from the front light from jejames and others of similar design make me nervous cycling in the city.

  • It's a light for seeing, not being seen. I've had good reports from bystanders about the Flea front as a 'being seen' light.

  • I have the smart rear light and there is no problems, a bit of vaseline around the seals and on contacts as a precaution. it is constantly getting drenched in rainy manchester

I might add a flea for the front. I just like the piece of mind of being able to charge it up easily via usb whilst sat in work so I know that I wont run out of juice on the way home.

  • I've swapped bars on my road bike and now have aero bars. The strap on the lockblock mount I've been using is too short to fit round these bars. Any alternative suggestions? It needs to hold a Fenix.

  • I have held a Fenix on the bars with a section of MTB inner tube for the last couple of winters.
Hook the loop of inner tube over the light, then take it over the bars and back over the end of the light.
    Works a treat.

  • Great idea but I'm looking for something that compliments bars that would have cost near £300 new and I don't see inner tubes doing that...

  • Cheers everyone for the advices ! I have opted for the jejames one, I will see what they are really worth then ! :) I have already a secondary front light on me usually when riding at night, which allow me to be visible by side. I might go for a flea in a next future, because I love the idea of USB charging and mini size. I guess it is also easily clipable on clothing/bags ?

Buy the bolt-on accessory bar thing PRO intend you to use?

  • Buy the bolt-on accessory bar thing PRO intend you to use?

For about £35, and then snap it when the weight of your light combines with a bump in the road.

  • Should have stuck with proper handlebars.

    ;-)

  • Given the two threaded inserts under the 'stem', you could probably make a really nice permanent mount for a light, but the Pro computer bracket isn't it.

  • Colin,
I think singspeed has a little rubber strap affair for sale that will hold a light onto handlebards, PM him

  • Thanks James. PM sent

  • Blackburn can fucking do one... my third Mars just died.

Fool me once shame on me... fool me... we cant get fooled again.

I know but I bought a bike, second hand, which had these fitted.
For a second hand bike it fitted me like a glove and after making a few small adjustments I got the dimensions exactly the same as another bike that Sherrit(sp) had fitted for me. On the fitting the stem length was reduced and we parted with the advice that, if still not perfect, take another 10 mm off the stem.
I managed to get another set of these bars off ebay recently, 10mm shorter for the second hand bike and, as luck would have it, the ones I removed are spot on, including the 10mm reduction, for the other bike. This is also the bike I use at night. I could have stuck the bars on ebay and got my money back but I find these soooo comfortable so I swapped them over.

That's an idea but sounds like hard work. There is also a mount, similar to the lockblock but that would fit on the stem but would mean no computer and no up / down adjustment of the light. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gun-Velcro-Torch-Laser-Mount-Bracket-Cycle-Helmet-/160495617904?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4462753522982264899http://rover.ebay.com/roverimp/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?ff3=2&pub=5574889051&toolid=10001&campid=5336527178&customid=&item=160495617904&mpt=3100134
All I need to make the lockblock work is a longer velcro fixing strap. The one with the above item may do the trick.

  • after a really fucking long time my mars 3.0 or 4.0 (whichever it is) has died. right now i'm leaning towards getting an exposure flare as my new primary rear light. any recommendations that trump the flare in any way?

  • any recommendations?

Get a new Mars. Blackburn lifetime warranty is handled through the shop you bought it from.

This, I've had a rear flea replaced by CRC but the second one died too and I'm now using a Mars 3, managed to loose my old Mars so just replaced it with like for like. Try taking the Mars apart and putting some silicone sealant on the joint then putting it back together should waterproof it a bit better

    nice website for beam comparisons.

  • So as I tested tonight the lightset I bought from Jejames, I thought I could share my first impressions.

The rear light does the job, clipped on the bag it is enough bright and act as expected at the moment. We will see about how long it will last.
The front light is esthetically very simple, not very beautiful to be honest, but it doesn't really matter to me. It takes 4 AAA batteries, and the system how the batteries are installed inside seems to be a bit cheap. Also the mount bracket is not very practical and it was a bit tricky to put it on my oversized bar. I wish they used the same system than Cateye for instance. It is a bit heavier than my Cateye HL-EL135 but definitely more powerful, I would say twice more. There is two mode, one flickering, to traumatise people that want to stare at it (seriously it does not seem to be a good idea) the beam is quite straight so you have not much visibility on the sides, and then I do think you might need a secondary front light 'to be seen'. Although my ride through Hyde Park on the commute was really pleasant and the beam was really helpful to see where I was going. Although I wouldnt advice off road, I think that at that price, it is a great front light for commuting in the city, as long as you have another one to be seen from the side ?Hopefully it will last looooong :)
