  • I just looked up the weight of the Marathon Plus (35c) that I use... 890g. The 38s are 940g. It's crazy thinking of tyres adding so much weight to a bike.

  • Cheers jono,

I do like crashing into people (and things) so have pretty beefy wheels (48 spoke, deep section rims marathon pluses).... But I find I don't crash that much anymore (partially out of getting better, but probably mostly just because I'm trying to play the ball more)... The two wheels together are almost 4kg. With race tyres, lower spoke count (and maybe lighter spokes) and slightly lighter rims I recon I could get down to 500g each.

By your calculations that would be the same as me loosing 30kg from my gut! Imagine how awesome I could be if I did both!

  • i have considered going 'ghetto tubeless' to save weight off my wheels..

I knew my wheelset is the heaviest part of my bike, but that's nuts, chukkers, 48 sapin strong spokes and 28 Marathons must weigh a metric fuckton.

But at the same time it's completely solid, and as I just spent 24 hours getting battered by Josh, Luca and Hayden I'm grateful of that. As Sandy said I wouldn't want to change my wheels mid game (or even take spare wheels with me)

  • I thought it was likely.

I'm considering carrying a second light weight wheelset to league/tourneys and having 'bombproof' set for daytoday polo (and commuting).

I Recon I'll be able to reduce the weight of my bike by about a quarter doing this! (and it's all rotational weigh)... And I'll have my daytoday wheelset with me incase a bork the light one...

    Is this a stupid idea?
Offset against this will be the extra work done lugging the extra wheelset to the court. Unless...?

What? My Panaracer Freeride tyres weigh a kilo and I thought that was heavy.

  • would anybody be interested (assuming the BB shell isn't too fucked) in buying my NS frame? can include headset and sq. taper BB, £30?

lockring on bb snapped off and since i was planning on getting something new i just carried on riding it since the BFF now the bearing is visible. i think the thread is still intact so may need drilling out or what have you. will probably be around this weekend.

  • Luca, what you gonna get instead?

  • Marathon Racer is good, mid-weight, good protection.

Marathon Supreme is what we are using, midweight, foldable (for travelling), minimal tread maximum grip.

Both the above tyres are half the weight of Marathon Plus, so you will save nearly a kilo of rotational weight from your bike if you are running M+ front and rear. This is noticeable.

I've been banging on about this for ages. Why doesn't anyone listen to me@?!? #sob

  • Well I'm down to my last two Pluses so I might give those a try. I stocked up and bought six when we still played outdoors and as soon as I did we moved into the warehouse. It's taken me almost a year to go through them. My current two still have plenty of tread.

  • Marathon Supreme's are pricy. You Cosmics got any cheapies for sale?

    Sorry, you COSMICs.

  • Bwahahahahaha!

Lovin' my 38c Nimbus, roll much faster than M+ but they're still 600+ grams each...

  • Free knackered SPD pedals. Could be ok if you want to try clipless?

Spa have them for 28squids, admittedly still not cheapcheap but an improvement on 40quid a tire.

  • panaracer ribmo (35c = 490g) recommendation by Taka

  • Yep, RiBMos are pretty sweet. Lots of players have used them in the past... they're not very skid resistant as the compound is nice and soft (grippy). They have a weird profile (pointy rather than round) but it's perfect in the corners and just requires a bit of getting used to.

  • How is the puncture protection on those thinner Marathons?

Obviously we shouldn't compromise on court, for off court comfort (at least IMO), but it's one thing that's stopped me moving away from M+.

  • If I didn't have to get my bike to and from the court it would be significantly different.

  • Lighter tyres = more punctures, it's worth it.

I wonder if NoFlats systems have come on since the 90s, they were rubbish back then but might be a bit better now?

Me too, but I never changed over when we started playing indoors. I kept that same way of thinking.

That said, I use my polo bike as my everyday bike and I've never had a puncture. Ever. I don't think I've changed these tubes since I bought these wheels a year ago.

  • My 1.35" Kojak's have "RaceGuard" which I think is a similar concept to some of Schwalbe's roadie-training tyres.

Not had a puncture yet and I'm definitely feeling quicker than my old 1.5/1.75 pair.

  • be even quicker with a freewheel

  • and my ns frame

  • I've got a few bits here if anyone wants anything? http://www.lfgss.com/thread76331.html
