  • I think I'll give the treadmill a go, if I start this week I'll know by Christmas if it having its desired effect, the plan is to use it for 1 session a week and I'll still be doing 4-5 sessions onthe great outdoors so don't worry outdoorsy people.

Plan is to do 3x2km at marathon pace -30 seconds with a gap for of about 4 minutes of recovery jogging.

  • I tried to start running regularly a few months ago but only managed to get out twice. But now that I'm settled into my uni routine I'm going to try and run on the weekdays that I'm not cycling, and rest over the weekend. Nothing too serious just a short run along the canal and back. I will be slowing down to walking quite a lot probably, but my aim is to eventually be able to do a whole circuit in one go without walking.

  • ^ awesome, you'll love it! If it gets too hard, walk for a minute, i do it every now and again and it lets you carry on. But before, soldier on and repeat 'run to become, become to run'

    ah yeah mantra time yall

  • ^ But don't choose Sri Chinmoy's mantra. His cult is a bit weird...

  • My mantra of choice is 'just keep going fatty!'

  • When i started running i started with the treadmill then gave up the gym and started outside.
It is so completely different as in i attempted running the distance i had been doing on the treadmill and it was so much harder.

Went for my 8 mile run yesterday after my week of rest and managed it in 1hour 10 mins.
Shaving 10 minutes off my previous !
Slowly getting there only another 18 to go :)

Any advice on running in icy snowy conditions for when we get the cold weather ?
Am a bit worried about falling and injury

Stix - re: winter running - back on the treadmill innit? ;)

Only kidding. Get off road, get some grippier trail shoes or go whole way and go fell running or enter your local xc league and get some spikes.

    Don't lean.

  • Glad someone asked the question about running in the ice/snow. I'm going to try and get off the roads and run the local park/ fields.

  • Thanks rhb !

  • I'm (possibly sadistically) looking forward to running in the snow.

  • When your steaming like a nutter quite literally that makes the cold weather all worth while!

  • Running in the snow is a lot easier than cycling in the snow.

I have these for trail running and they were awesome in last years snow, they work best in the fresher less compacted stuff and were still a bit slippy on large patches of ice but broadly speaking I thought they were ace. During the snow I tried to get off road as much as possible and it was an absolute joy - some of the best running I've ever done (christmas day was particularly amazing). I remember going running when the whole country seemed to close down and running down the middle of roads through towns as cars were stuck or crawling at a snails pace. Fantastic stuff.

  • Also how about running at night if certain sections are in total black? I'm tempted to buy a head torch as it'll make running down some of the country lanes much easier.

    although note:

A note on batteries: The Gamma and Indigo headtorches have not been designed to work with lithium batteries. Lithium batteries have a high output during discharge which means they can cause the torch to overheat and possibly damage electronics and LEDs. We recommend using a good quality alkaline battery such as Energizer. Cheap batteries are more likely to leak and leave a gooey mess on the contacts.

  • I'm going to go for a run today.

There, I've said it on here so now I can't back out.

I did it! Just did nearly two miles, and didn't walk once! It would appear that I'm a bit fitter than I was during the summer, I didn't even get madly out of breath. Let's see if I can do it again tomorrow.
