I genuinely don't understand how it's ok to do this to a crab, but not ok to do it to a cat.
Or my neighbors son.
Because cats and people are not considered food (though cats maybe considering an extreme survival situation). Crabs are, by most people. Whether you agree with that or not is a different discussion...

I think that was my point.
I still don't understand other people's definintions of what food is, it doesn't seem to make any sense to me, but hey ho...
If I ever do go back to eating meat I hope I go back to eating all meat that won't land me in prison. It seems more honest (and fun!!1!).

It is ok to do it to a cat, if you are hungry.

I was under the impression that anything not human, and nutritious was fair game. A better question than the one you pose, is "what makes something not ok?"
Is it morality? Religion? Empathy towards potential living food stuffs? Guilt?
Humans can ONLY eat things from living sources (other than trace minerals of course). Our nutrition comes from living things. You can survive on plants but what makes it ok to eat plants and not animals? And how would you feel about things that fall in between? Corals, Jellyfish, Insects etc? Where do living things get advanced enough that it is not ok?
And back to the point, WHY is it not ok? Because of the empathy again? Perceived emotions of our living food stuffs?
If we genetically engineered cattle and pigs with no brains (or at least no conciousness) would it be ok to eat them? What about simple lab grown tissue?

Well, yes, if you are hungry you have the same 'right' (or natural inclination) as any other animal, to eat what sustains you.
I know my cat or even my pet chickens would not hesistate to eat me given the chance. And I would eat them too if I needed to. (Even though I literally hug my chickens at times).

Which meat eating lands you in prison? Outside of cannibalism and property theft I don't think eating any animal would get you put in prison would it?
Might be an interesting argument in court.
I've certainly no desire to do it but I believe its legal to eat cats, dogs, horses etc... as long as they're your own property. Might be issue with slaughtering animals in a non approved area though.
