Can highly recommend these guys - www.2dive4.co.uk - worth the train ride out of London (and probably cheaper than London based dive centres). Also, London School of Diving is in Chiswick.
Go for a Try Dive - the club will provide all the kit, and it will be in a swimming pool. If you're going to take to it, you'll find out as soon as you try breathing underwater. You will or you won't, but the try dive will certainly give you enough time to try it to see whether you want to move on to the Open Water course and then off to Egypt - cheap, close and awesome diving. I went diving on my own to Egypt/mexico/belize/kenya/spain, but there will be club trips you can join if you don't know any divers.
For the first few holidays, count on hiring kit. Once you've done a few weeks of kit hire, then it will be worth buying some of your own kit.
