• Just now a taxi (not in London, not a black cab) pulling out of a side road into traffic just acted as if I wasn't there at all. I think he would have driven into me if he didn't have to stop before touching another car; I was trackstanding while turned towards the curb a bit and the corner of his bumper was actually within the angle made by my front wheel and frame, something like this:

I just kind of looked at him blankly while he rolled towards me then when he stopped gave him the finger with a dramatic flourish while toppling sideways and trying to get my foot free (I succeeded and filtered away from him when the car in front moved).

Not a complete horror story like some of the posts in here but I was stunned by how completely he refused to acknowledge that I was there.

Also this is probably the wrong thread since I'm not reporting him but I couldn't find a right one.

  • This made me pretty mad... Islington off of New North Road... An old bloke in a mobility scooter drives onto the road to get round some obstruction on the pavement (I'm about 30 yards behind). Van overtakes me and drives right up behind the old chap (he han't get past because of a keep left bollard), so he leans on the horn and then the passenger gives the old chap an earful of abuse when they go past. I didn't get the number plate but phoned the firm. Bingo - the manager sounds genuinely concerned and says they only have three vans and he knows exactly which was in Islington. Hope the twats think twice next time.

Black merc exec cunt wagon rode me into the curb on the approach to Vauxhall bridge.

I've reported this as I have half a dozen other incidents over the last year but has anyone actually had any comeback from 'Roadsafe'? Seems to me that this web form could just drop into a Met Police dustbin under a PR facade of tackling dangerous driving.

  • Indeed - I've never had a response from them.

  • Yeah I've had the standard response. I meant the next stage of investigation if say the same numberplate is flagged up multiple times.

It's obvious that a cycling near miss would be at the bottom of the Met's priorities this could just be a way to let you vent spleen and feel something is being done.

"dealt with accordingly" could mean anything. I deal with stuff accordingly all the time chucks in bin

there's your problem. all serious cases are handled by the guys on the floor below...

I find this incident amazing. The cyclist is so calm unlike the woman who runs him over and keeps on screeching "where were you?!" ...

  • there's a lot of mind-numbing derp in the comments section too.

That's frightening. He was in full high vis with his lights on and two motorists still managed to run him over? Neither of those people should be on the road.

His conduct after the incident is exemplary - I can't imagine I'd be as calm (actually, I was involved in a hit and run a couple of weeks ago - a taxi driver on his mobile pulled out on me and knocked me off - and I was furious in the truest sense of the word.)

there's a lot of mind-numbing derp in the comments section too.

I'm having a nice day so I'll read them on Monday.

  • Exemplary conduct on the cyclist's part. Terrifying driving.

    wow

  • doesn't fucking help that tfl have peppered the lanes with parking spaces out of rush hour so people get used to the idea of being able to park in them.

This angers me so much. WHAT IS THE F*CKING POINT?!?!?!?!?! Why have a path specifically designed for cyclists then allow people to park in them????

the Superhighway is a very popular parking spot in Tooting.

Still it mean motorists are more patient with me when there's cars on the bike lane and I'm on the primary position with no way of them overtaking.

We need to get someone to do a film with Danny MacAskill riding over the top of cars parked in mandatory cycle lane, taking out a few windscreens in the process.

  • I would support the former but not the latter.

That's absolutely unbelievable! Amazing that he stayed so calm although he seemed to be in quite serious shock. Maybe if the driver of the Focus that ran over him stopped screeching "where were you" and made sure he was ok it would be better use of her time!!

Sad to see some negative comments about 'red light jumping cyclists' too. Seems to be the standard response even in situations like this where the cyclist did everything right.

  • I guess the answer to bad drivers is to not let the traffic catch you...

  • Slightly off-topic maybe but an article that TfL have suppressed about women cyclists being more likely to be killed in traffic that might suggest red-light jumping is, in some cases, the safest option:* "It suggests that some cyclists who break the law by jumping red lights may be safer and that cycle feeder lanes may make the problem worse. "*

  • That's been around for quite some time - I'm sure I first read that three or maybe even four years ago.

It's still very interesting and worth reading.

  • Thanks for posting that bethandr. Interesting reading. I've often felt that way about cycle lanes and absolutely hate cycle lanes which share the carriageway with other vehicles. I think they are a massive mistake in road planning. They create the perception that cyclists belong exclusively in demarked areas and are wrong to cycle more defensively. They also promote a misguided sense of safety amoung certain riders. They also promote undertaking of both dangerous vehicles and other riders.

I also concur that on occasion it is safer to 'pre-empt' a light and move off before an HGV has the opportunity to place you under undue pressure. This is how I personally approach it and I'm sure I'm overdue a fine for doing it.
