Surly Steamroller owners...

  • I have ordered the SKS Chromoplastics in black - should be with me tomorrow will put them on this weekend. I'm running 25 front and 28 rear most of the year, I know I can put bigger on. But don't need to, my commute route is mainly an A-road. Always moving and quiet at times, good surface. So it's just rain that is my concern, if it snows I'll take the train.

  • Is 38mm the max clearance in total or with brakes?

    With brakes.

The Crosscheck go up to a whopping 45c.

  • what's the steamroller clearance without a rear brake then? anyone?

    bueller? bueller?

  • Finally, here's my Surly.

    Pretty sure its 38

  • From www.surly.com:

    Tire clearance

Room for tires up to 700c x 38mm. Individual tire and rim combos affect tire clearance, but figure on being able to use tires up to 32mm with fenders (p.s. use clip-on fenders)

Not sure if I'd be able to go beyond 28s with my SKS fenders. Currently running 25s, with clear daylight between rubber and chromolplastic.

  • I've been lurking in this thread for way to long not to post my ride.
She's a little beat up from a wreck i had one fine evening in Korea, but to be honest the bike fared far better than I did. I left with a broken collar bone and the bike had some handlebar tape ripped up, a piece of the seat tore off (i found it later and put it back) and one flat tire.
I'd like to think it's a testament to the abuse Surly's can take.

  • Crap, bad link in the first post.

  • I had a 38mm tyre mounted in the fork. Fitted well, but can't say much about left clearance for mudguards as I don't have such yet..
Also had to see, that it is a tricky job to get a big sized tyre to fit to the back with a long enough chain, enough clearance to the TT and the bridge on the seat stays.. Since the current chain is to short, I failed miserably to get it done.

Anyway, what I noticed then: there is enough clearance at the front to go maybe up to 42+ mm? (Provided the brake doesn't get into the way before the frame does..)
Well, that's my only experience so far.

  • Missing my Creamroller :(

  • I finally got my set of SKS P35s on friday they are a bit of a mission to get on. Saw a couple of videos on youtube, and people end up having to cut and file the metal spokes, use alternative washers.
@andytk DId you have to do anything in addition to the instructions of source extra bits?

  • +1 on the Crosscheck. Speccing 57mm long drop calipers on the Steamroller and then no mudguard eyelets on the frame and fork is just daft.

This is the 2nd time I've fitted chromoplastics to a bike and they've been a nightmare both times.

I didn't have any problems with the rear, for the front, I did need to file out the bit that attaches to top of the fork, the bolts for my break were too big, didn't take much and it fits fine now.

I attached the metal stays to the front and back with P-clips, then cut them down with a set of bolt croppers before fitting some spare plastic caps I had (I still don't understand what the black things that come with them are meant for)

I can take a few pictures later if you need.

It wouldn't be a Steamroller if it would have the same features of a Crosscheck.

  • Granted, but it would be nice to even just have mudguard eyelit, most frame nowadays come standard with mudguard eyelit with the exception of those 'race ready' one, even their Pacer have mudguard eyelit.

  • What BB's do these bad boys take?

In case someone shouts: Yes, they will hit and scrub against the wheel (but if carefully placed, only when you slam into a pothole). But it doesn't impair it's function: keep of more or less the muck.
Best of all, it takes less than 10 seconds to mount them, so no rattling on dry days...
They aren't the best, since the area around the BB will be dirty as fuck, your feet soaking, but it still pays off having them. And they aren't costly either. :-)

And I stand my point: Still no need for eyelets on the 'roller. Further up the thread p-clips have been mentioned if the need persists...

P.S. The one above will only accept tyres up to 25mm. Have ordered the 40mm variant to see how it will fit into the frame with some nice big tyres..

  • Met a bloke in Bristol who does bike 'tattoos' with enamel paint
He painted my avatar on my steamroller. Said he would come to London to tattoo bikes if people were interested

  • That's the nuts

  • My one

  • Now I know why I don't want a creamroller. It would have to look all clean and spot on.

  • That's the nuts

    If stickers weren't enough...

  • I'll burn off the stickers and leave the avatar...
