So would this be a league of semi-permanent teams? I might be more in favour of an individual mini league a la the upcoming cambridge tourney, but with fixed teams each night....
-

I don't really understand the question, but I'll attempt to clarify:
Random teams would be chosen in December, and each team would play each other once, so only 4 or 5 games each.
The Cambridge thing is all well and good, but what if there's 7, 8, 10 people playing or whatever? Also, if you were going to do that over a few months or whatever, people would end up playing totally mismatched amounts of games against mismatched opposition. If I get what you're suggesting...

Right lets try again.
The only way that doing it individually (a la Neil) could work is if you kept a rigorous tally of who you have played with, who you have played against, what the score was and who scored. this would be almost impossible unless their could be a simpler way of doing it. - Perhaps one throw-in game per session in which people are individually scored for a team win. this is random though as it's a throw-in and again who's going to keep the tally? and where would we say: 'right that's enough, let's see who's won.'
The fixed teams idea sounds a lot better to me, but if I was in a team with you Dan, and you broke a finger, would that mean I couldn't score any points for 4-6 weeks? I understand that we have lots of time for this, so we would all play the same amount in the end, but it may just fizzle out if one team is out for a while... unless we have 'games in hand' like football?
If we do go with fixed teams, then we should do it based on ABC seeding, otherwise it will be shit if we end up with a team of all beginners or occasionals (although a mighty fine team name...The Occasionals)

i just typed a massive response and then my fucking internet broke.
No way, me too! but i'm just going to summarise now.
I was going to say it's going to be really hard to organise a regular league.
I was going to say how about we have a few A-B-C* 1 day mini tournaments.
I was going to say this is easier to organise and accommodates all skill levels and attendance levels.
I was going to say each being an independent tournament but with the ability to aggregate scores like the National Series.- Players are ranked into three groups. Teams must consist of one player from each tier.

awesome idea Dan! The league here in London is ace because:
- you get to play 'competitively' through the winter and are ready for that first tourney of the summer
- it forces you to keep playing even when you feel you cant be arsed when midwinter really bites and turnout falls
- its fucking fun!
- you improve shitloads both individually and as a team
GO bIRMINGHAM MINI LEAGUE!

@EMM - dunno about the AGM, to be honest it's a minefield trying to get agreement on a day for maximal turnout. I could just do my dictator thing and name a day and people who can't make it can make sure thei opinions are known beforehand...
As far as injury problems go, bear in mind that this is going to be 10-15 games spread over 3 months or so, so there's time to recover from minor injuries. If it caused a problem and the league was dragging on we could use subs according to the A/B/C ranking. Also, the league wouldn't be over until all teams had played each other, so in the case of injury, your team may not play for a few weeks, but you'll have games in hand and have time to make that mega-comeback.
I agree - ABC ranking would be best.
**@hyper **I don't think it would be that difficult to organise, as it goes some way to taking account of varied attendance levels. Again, if it drags on too long, or is more difficult than I think, we can always use subs to get it finished. I'm not explaining it very well, but it's only 4-5 fixtures for each team, which should be achievable and not dominate throw-ins. I think 1-day tournaments won't work in Birmingham because we can't get everyone out at once. The 2-player format only resulted in 11 players IIRC, and it's very rare we get more than 10 on one day. Also, it would be an all-dayer, which would be challenging to organise and not many people can commit to that, it seems.
@punkture - thanks. If it goes ahead it will be much smaller/rubbisher than the London league, but everyone has to start somewhere... If it goes well, we could extend it it to Spring/Summer/Autumn leagues, too...

i'm in too. Will we need to re seed? We can have an impromptu meeting tonight I guess, then flesh it out to something concrete at the actual agm.

The parts for my frame repair are now made. My old man will get on the case and braze it soon, so I'll be back playing after the crimbo holidays (early Jan)

Cool - I reckon we'll be able to squeeze in games for you and Andy, we just need to make sure you're not on the same team, and ask for a bit of flexibility on your parts if we need to squeeze games in. I wouldn't really like to see this so-called 'mini' league go on after the end of March.

I think this would definitely help polo in Birmingham. Playing games in teams that actually mean something would bring on a whole new level of commitment which I think is needed. I also think frequent one day tournaments as mentioned by fin would help achieve the same. I'd love to take part but don't want to be a hindrance in terms of being away all the time or not being able to play each Sunday/Wednesday.

Thanks Andy - just put your name down! It's going to be spread over three or four months, so you should have time to get your games done when you're back from Uni. If it isn't working out, someone can always sub in for you towards the end.

Just an idea to encourage turnout over the next few (dark/cold/wet) months, and introduce an inclusive team-play aspect to our scene now the Pigs/Scouts/Drills have kind of disbanded...
If we drew names from a hat of everyone who plays to some extent, we'd have enough for 5-6 teams. Everyone plays each other once, but a game is 3 x 10mins (as per London, I think) so limited potential for draws. Maximum one game per Wed/Sunday session so plenty of time for random throw-ins/fast/slow games too.
It would only total 10-15 games, but with people being out of town/different levels of attendance/fate it would take at least 3 months I reckon. My thinking is that we can accommodate everyone, regardless of how often they play (within reason), although if it's getting drawn-out we may have to schedule additional meet-ups, or allow Andy/Stu/other less-regular players the chance to play more than one game per meet-up.
Gives people something to aim for and would be a useful statistical tool if we do seeding or when we re-form teams for 2012 tournaments. We'd need at least one ref per fixture, hopefully goal refs too. It would be awesome to keep a tally of scorers/assists, too.
Anything to add/change/discuss?
