  • think it would look pretty rad!

  • 9 hours travel later...

bits are on just for seeing how heavy/clearances etc, will take better photos soon. pretty chuffed with it, cant decide whether or not to sell. sooo nice but i dont see myself doing it justice, either in the groupset i could afford or in my own fitness levels. watch the classifieds with beady eyes folks!

  • Wow.

  • After riding a 'town bike' for a while I've been craving a lighter bike. Initially I was thinking about a single-speed, but after riding my friend's fixie I absolutely loved it. So started to ask people about frames and look around. I found a Reynolds 531 on eBay for £60 so bought it and stripped it down - apart from the bottom bracket that the nice folks at Tokyo Fixed did for me with the appropriate tool. I got some advice from a guy at work about removing the braze-ons and then sanded the frame smooth. I also took the rear derailleur hanger off too.

So now it's in the paint shop and should be finished tomorrow. Will post pics of its new colour!

  • requires crabon.

  • Finished Les... first ride today loads of fun. Mate's given me some airwings as well that I'm gonna stick on after trying the risers for a bit.

Looks awesom but needs black headset.

I've made a couple of head badges from copper. All you need is a bit of scrap pipe, some needle files and a bit of patience. Also a blow torch and some solder if you want to go 3d. Cant post pics at the mo coz my work internet browser won't let me onto my blog.

  • ^realy like the patina on that. Makes me think of an old iron bridge or something. I like the silver headset too.

  • Cheers, I kinda like the headset to be honest... and as for a headbadge being easy to make, sure it would be for someone with even a grain of artistic talent.... that someone is not me!

  • I also like the headset, got the same on my fix and im really fond of it.

  • +1 enough of this black headset nonsense. :)

Are you planning on brushing on linseed oil or something? It's too nice to let fall apart.

  • At the moment i've been coating it with wd40 or GT85 (whichever is to hand) and wiping it down. Is linseed oil what i want then? for some reason i had cedar oil in my head?

  • I've no idea if I'm honest. I've not owned a naked bike before.

I think there is a thread on here dedicated to stripping and treating steel frames.

  • Just stripped my Bruiser and have plastered the thing with Magnatec engine oil.

  • been riding a raw bike for about 4 months, every day in all weather, just soaked it in engine oil and left it in the sun for a weekend when i got it, and wipe it with an oily rag every 2 or 3 weeks. easy.

  • vaseline's pretty good

  • vaseline's pretty good

    in general?

  • well obviously, but also for weather coating metal frames.

  • My pompino has been raw for 4+ months after stripping and applying a very light layer of linseed oil. Developing a nice patina but nothing that I would describe as proper rust spots. So linseed oil seems to be doing the job fine for the 4130 chromoly steel that the pompino is made of. Not sure if protection will vary according to steel make up... 531 etc

  • I have never treated a raw frame, but I have treated raw metals, steels and irons and I found a wood wax to work a treat. I think with linseed oil you might have to keep up its application more often as it is quite thin.

  • I have treated raw metals, steels and irons and I found stove enamel or polyester powdercoat to work a treat.

    .

  • ha yeah ok, but for a matte simple home job wax is fine.

  • malaysian what headset is that? I have the same on my benotto but I dont know what it is.. nuovo record?

  • I love dumb saddles so I was stoked when I got this nos Iscaselle Time saddle!
