Something nice second hand Nathan, new sub-£500 road bikes aren't all that from what I've seen and you'll get much more for your money. Either the modern, practical end of vintage or a 'nearly new'. e.g. This would have been too small for you but would have been a cracking way to spend c.£500 on a roadie.
Before I got my Colnago I'd ridden fixed constantly since 2008, riding gears was weird. It really took some getting used to. I was petrified of only having the brakes to stop me, it felt unsafe. And using the gears properly took some re-learning. And I had to learn to freewheel, I kept pedalling constantly!
I'd agree now isn't the time of year, although that does mean potential bargains as other people think the same thing.
