A better chainset is a much more noticeable updgrade than a stem. All stems (and seatposts) are pretty much the same.
But there is a world of difference from basic square taper setup and any outboard BB type.
The Token stem is really the poorest quality stem I have ever owned. Hardware is M5 stainless and the heads have been machined so really not confidence inspiring in any way. None of the bolts seat properly against the stem body so god knows what stresses they are all under. The chrome has already cracked in places where the aluminium underneath is under tension. As the stem is chromed inside and out, it is prone to slipping and i've had to tighten all the hardware beyond the recommended torque settings. All in it is a massive bag of shit which will be replaced very soon. (if anyone can recommend a 90mm x 10° stem, available in anodised blue that is not the Hope one with the ugly laser etched logos and ugly cutouts, It would be massively apreciated)
Chainset on the otherhand has been very good. It is made for Stronglight by Sugino and it is exactly the same as the Sugino XD2 chainset (has the XD2 casting on the back). I will however be upgrading this eventually. If you can recommend a hollow axle chainset, with outboard bottom bracket, that works with the overall look of the bike and also gives a 53mm chainline, I would be eternaly greatful!!! (small pcd would be best as I'm planning to do some cyclocross soon)

why not just get a Thomson stem? would suit the build, no?
as for cranks, how about http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=31621 ?

Yeah, I was thinking I was going to go for a Thomson stem but now I've got it in my head that I want an anodized blue. Might get a Thomson one anodized.
Problem with the chainset is getting the chainline right. I've got a 53mm chainline and I'm pretty sure that Sram chainset is for a 42mm chainline + I really want a silver chainset.

ah right, wasn't sure if with the gxp it was adjustable a little... I'm no expert. thought the black would look good with the wheelset.
why you so set on a blue stem!? silver would look great.

Don't really know where the blue stem things come from. I guess I liked that fashion for black stems back in the late eighties/early nineties + i've always loved an S&M Redneck in classic red. Guess I've just got a thing for mismatched stems n thought blue would look good. Having said that, I'm now thinkin I might get the seatpost done too.

Not blue, but you might be interested.
This seller on ebay has a few Avid SAAGO stems. I think they're pretty tidy and would suite your bike.

If they came in the right size I'd be more than just interested, I'd have snapped one right up. Beautiful stem. Never seen them before. Unfortunately I need a 90mm x 10 degree (or -10 for anything that can't be flipped) with 31.8 clamp.

I could use a -10 degree stem for my road bike. I've not found much niceness other than Thomson (so far).

Put SKS chromoplastic guards on my pompino last night.
Was a bit of a hassle - I've got a mini-v brake on the front and there wasn't enough room to get the front guard underneath it. So out came the hacksaw - my front guard pretty much stops at the fork crown now but at least my brakes still work.
Drilled the rear guard to screw it into the mudgard hole at the top of the rear wishbone.
Now they're on they feel nice and solid.
I'm running marathon plus 28c and though you could probably fit bigger in there I don't know that I'd be awfully keen to.

good shout, i was going to try and put some on mine with 35mm marathons. in the end I've got a $15 clip on rear one that offers very little protection to anywhere but my butt.

lose the heavy mudguard look...go white!! (with matching white rolls saddle of course)
-

^^^ Just needs white bar tape to complete the "look".

Has anyone got one of the new frames without the rear cable hanger...can you run a canti break direct without it or do you really have to use one of those fugly seat clamps with the hanger integrated...thoughts and opinions please?
-
• #419
Look like you're right I'm afraid, don't necessary need one with hanger integrated, can be seperated if necessary.
Or get a fork mounted one to mount on the bridge.

Never had a problem using one of these:

You could always get a new frame and swap with my ratty old one? (complete with built in hanger!) ;)
I've switched from cantos to mini-vs on my pompino and I've very happy with them - maybe consider them instead?

Might have to as I dont seem to be able to find a 29.8mm seatclamp with hanger - planet-x and on-one dont even appear to sell one..doh!

What size SKS guards are you running? I'm thinking I'll not be going larger than a 28mm tyre on my pomp so was going to go for the 20-28mm guards. Is that a good idea, or would it be best to go for the 30-35mm ones for better protection?

^ Interested to know also. I run 25's at the moment, but considering changing to 32's for winter. Should I be looking at the 42mm SKS's?
Mine was dispatched today so should be here soon. Not sure what to do about forks, at the moment I'm running a pretty traditional steel touring fork but I'd like to be able to barspin the pompino so thinking I might bung some NS Analog frks or something on it. Anyone know if the Pometamine forks will spin with a 700c wheel?
