I might be up for this. Just how cheeky are these hills? I managed the St. Margaret's ride fixed, but wouldn't really fancy anything much steeper (hills were 20% I think). Also, I heard OLC will be giving guided tours of his alma mater!
My suggestion is that if you are unsure or uncomfortable with going single or fixed, bring the gears. The critical thing is that people turn up on time, and enjoy the ride. If fixed will make it a tough but manageable challenge, all well and good. However, if you are uneasy, then take the sensible option and enjoy the trip.
We are waiting for everyone on this ride, so charging up the hills on your Colnago 22 speed like Marco Pantani, will only mean you have longer to wait for the wheezing old duffers at the back on their "ye olde worlde "single speeds.
