33 is fine, 40 might be a bit too long. The length is not set in stone, it depends on how tall you are. Don't buy new poles yet, try out different sizes on Tues, the spare mallets are of different lengths for a starter. I think people usually have it up to their waist or a bit lower. I have found myself already having to cut mine about 2ins shorter since the beginning.
