  • i've found an oil filled radiator for £24.99 it's 600 watt this means nothing to me will it be expensive to run?

You want this to heat a medium sized bedroom right?
Will this be the only source of heat in the room?
I'm assuming you're house sharing maybe and the bedroom is also used as your own space so doubling up as a lounge???

If my maths are correct and based on a quick internet search, a 12 x 12' bedroom would require around a 4,600 BTU radiator for centreal heating which seems to equate to around 1,350 watts so 600 will be too small if there's no other heat sourch. This increases to around 1,700 watts for a lounge (higher temperature).

I reckon you want around a 2kw heater with a timer, a thermostat and switchable heat settings - maybe something like this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4153166/Trail/searchtext%3EOIL+RADIATOR.htm

Lidls are currently selling this at 39.99 which has a small inbuilt fan heater which can be used to provide a more rapid initial heat up but no timer.

Also search ebay, gumtree, etc. if money's a bit tight. As with most things in life, the dearer items tend to be better built.

The key factor in running costs is controlling the use. Forget about how much it costs to run if it's left on all the time, eg Dammit's coffee machine. The trick is to particularly use the thermostat carefully. Set the timer so the rooms warm when you get in. Turn the thermostat down to a lower setting when you head for bed or turn it off completely and set the timer for 30 mins before you get up.
Do not do what my wife does which is open the windows and leave the heat on when it gets too hot.....
