Yeah I'm not a fan of padding for long journeys either - it makes my doodle (fnar fnar) go numb. No padding is somewhat less cushy but definitely better. I cut the padding out of my Aldi trousers last year... at the same time I also got an executive desk chair and some tinned lobster thermidor.
