    Yeah, it's about the same.
    I am using this stem as it's easier to adjust to a comfortable long distance riding position. The pursuit angle is a bit aggressive for a longer ride.

  • That does seem to make sense, thinking back to friends who think they've got it nailed then over they go. I went over my first time, was slowing down to a stop on a very narrow country lane to let a horse by. As I fall the horse gets a fright and bucks up in the air with this elderly gentleman rider being totally calm and in control. It's funny how after a while it becomes second nature.

    Everyone has a first time spd story and thats a great one. Me and a mate got ours for christmas when we were about 14 and went out on boxing day to ride up an iced up, very steep, country lane. Obviously we fell off a number of times and slid on our arses, attached to the bike down the hill. We still remind each other about it now, almost 20 years on :)

    haha, dont worry using the original alli stem on the dawes. and the bianchi is in a bit of a state! as soon as I've got the dawes up and running its the bianchi's turn!

    The frame was made in 81, none of the components are younger than 81 (wanted to see what was possible with a steel bike 30 years ago)

    Still waiting for a OMAS titanium front wheel (currently on early Dura Ace) which is on the way. Also if anybody has period (70's early 80's) alloy forks (alan vitus) with a min. 19cm steerer, i would be interested. Also need a 36h Super Champion Competition, Medaille D' Or Rim.

    Frame is made of unknown Columbus tubing (most probably SL) fork is a heavy 531 jobby.

    This is my only roadbike and built to be ridden, i had to replace some super light bits (huret jubilee rear mech, modolo shifters) as they weren't working properly. Still a few things to do, my hope is to get it down to 7.5 kilos with 36h/28h wheels and normal tubs

  • Apparently there were 24h OMAS hubs - your mission should be to track some down so that you can then buy my 24h Mavic CX18s to go with :-)

  • i have some 24h omas nos ti hubs..but i wanted to ride the bike...cx 18s are around 300 grams, right?

    I think if i stick with the 36h rear hub and the medaile d'or (265 grams) rim I should get a nice rideable rear wheel. 32h would be ideal but i can't find a 32 ti hub.

  • Is it wrong to butcher an old (+-1975) racer, if its in a state too far gone to restore to original? and by butcher I mean, strip down to respray.. and maybe cut off a few unwanted bits...

  • Do whatever you want. it's a nice frame i guess, but nothing feels as good as doing what you want ;-)

    In all honesty, there's a bit of dignity in keeping the original - but it looks pretty knackered.

    Im new to the forum, and thought my plan of building a "hotrod" was a good one..
    Until I mentioned it yesterday, and soon found out it was frowned upon..
    Obviously if the frame was in a better condition Id restore it, nothing like a bit of classy old time..ism, but I think the way it is now I could never do it justice!
    Oh well thanks for the advice, I shall crack on without the remorseful feeling in my gut..
    and will enjoy the shit out of it!!haha

    CX18s are more like 330g. Ridability of 24h shallow rims depends on your weight - I had no problems with them when I was ~70kg, built with ACI Aero spokes. The wall thickness on the CX18s (same as GP4s, the lower weight all comes from the narrower width) means they are likely to be more durable than your 265g rims, expect lots of cracking around the spoke holes on those very thin walled rims. Mavic GEL280s were notorious for it.
