Les so far, paint stripping is a bitch! gonna leave it now and gradually clean it up as I go.
Got sram s300 chainset to go on, but no GXP tool. Bars need cutting down a bit and got some black ourys to complete the HHSB look.
Needs a different front tyre as well, got one I'm taking off another bike when I get round to it.
i don't think you need the GXP tool. I fitted my omniums GXP BB just by hand and then you just need a big allen key (forget which size) to fit the cranks. make sure there is no play though, if there is take them off and start again

Yeah, they probably only make the tools for fun. You don't really need the bottom bracket done up tight. :)
Malaysian, the bike is lookin rad. Love raw with black components. Is it bare steel or have you had it clear coated?

^if the cranks are on properly the BB can't move. I've been riding them 8 months without issue, probably soon to be in epic fail thread no doubt..

Hi all,
I've got a stripped down frame,(PICS TO FOLLOW) and was wondering what components might be best to use when rebuilding?
I've done some research, and found some answers, but don't want to go ahead and purchase bits if they aren't gonna fit the old frame, or might look a bit silly!
I want decent spares that wont break the bank basically.
First and foremost can I use any 1" threaded head set? found a bbb on ebay that looks promising!
second question, can I use a modern carterage bottom bracket, or do I have to stick to the original cup and cone.. and whats the best bet?
Any other advice or recommendations are most welcomed
Thanks in advance

ftfy.
Surprised that after 8 months it's not creaking like a bitch.

Duncan.. strip that frame and get it resprayed. Rust looks nasty.
Parts are up to you really - it's a pretty personal thing.

I'd say keep the paint. It's a wicked colour and is full of character. I think lots of GT85 and a rough rag should help sort it out. Plus the head tube lugs are stainless steel aren't they?
Parts wise...
Headset - check the inside races, but I think a new Tange one would be a good idea.
Cranks - second hand campag strada style ones.
BB - a modern cheapo shimano sealed one.
Wheels - try building your own. Silver Mavic open sports laced with ACI spokes onto silver on-one/px track hubs, is an all round solid build that will complement the frame. The rest of the parts are usable, and you can swap them as and when you're inclined. Altho I would say get a modern calliper brake. A Tektro long drop is probably the sensible choice.

DuncanWelcome Duncan.
It's worth using the 'search' box (top right) for info on particular parts. Also read Sheldon Brown's pages on fixed gear and chainlines.
You should be fine with standard size 1" threaded headsets. Something like a Tange Prestige is pretty good and less than £20 and most likely stocked by the bike shop that you're getting to fit it.
You should also be fine with a standard British threaded cartridge BB. Read up on tapers and axle lengths, and don't discount using your existing cranks.
Also check the frame is the right size for you before you spend money on paint or a powdercoat.
Best of luck.

The cranks look like cottered cranks. In which case, I'd say move on. I tried so hard with mine, but at the end of the day it's just not worth it. Still it was a learning experience.
Also definitely put some miles on the the bike before commuting money to resprays etc.

Are you stuck with the cup n cone BB with cottered cranks? I've never had to deal with them.

Hi all, thanks for the great advice so far,
Ive got a bianchi via nirone 5 I think it is.. and Im very happy with the comfort of the fit and size, (been riding it for 3 years now) but its a 24 speed.
I wanted something as a project and also to find out what all the who hare is about the single speed, so I found said dawes..
the frame is almost identical size and shape to bianchi, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I intend doing all the work myself, as Ive got the tools(£29.99 essential kit from halfords.. BRILLIANT value for money and everything I need)+ a little know how.
I was thinking to strip it down, respray it a matt black, and hit it with some deep red pinstriping.
As for components, Like I said before good quality for a fare price..., not skimping on anything, and keeping it light weight!
Ive now perchased the BBB headset so all good there.
Ive got some components from an old specialized sirrus 2 thats been lying around for a while (cracked frame), Which I think I can modify to fit and suit this build, ie crank set (was tripple, but nothing a grinder cant fix, and then get hold of a 49t chain set for the front.. only thing Id need is the BB..,
Ive had a look at what sheldon brown has to say, but when I search for 'British thread', nothing comes up??
I think its tapered because when I tried the sirrus BB it when in a little then just stopped..
I guess the only advise or recomendation I need then is for the BB..?
And ill figure the rest out as I go along.
Thanks again

Cheers, Ive sorced some 'espresso bits so far, Break lever, calipar, and rear deepV wheel. wanted to use a none deep v on the front, so still looking for that..
Tube lugs are stainless steel, will this effect my options in any way?

Not sure where my post went...
I think SJC do sealed cotter bb's, but I don't know if they have different spindle lengths.
Personally I don't have a problem with loose BB's, but cottered cranks just don't work that well. It's not like the difference between a quill stem and ahead, it's more like steel and alu wheels.

I got this as the doner bike for the winter colnago project , but its really fegging nice. so now not so sure if i should strip it..................

..
'British thread'Tube lugs are stainless steel, will this effect my options in any way?
CheersRE 'British thread' - Just measure the size of the bottom bracket. It will probably be standard. I doubt it will be italian. See here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_bo-z.html
Also you are usually best off searching sheldon via google, not in the site itself.
Re Stainless steel lugs: It doesn't effect anything other than aesthetics. If you clean and polish them they will come up like mirrored chrome. So if you choose to respray, do this first and then mask them off.
As I said, I think it's a real shame to loose what looks like a unique colour. IMO the frame has a lot of cool details that will be lost forever with a respray.
But your frame, your choice, your money.

stripped it? why the hell? the paint and chrome in excellent nick, unless you mean the part, can't see any reason to change it unless it's worn.

strip the parts to put on to the colnago super frame i am building up, but the doner bike is very much better than expected. I brought it with out seeing it. got it posted on the identify parts thread as well as seller says alan shorter but comes with new paint and no decals, so i know nothing..apart from its full of win!
More details?
