  • Anyone have any experience with either of these frames?

    Are they good value, etc?

  • No experience.

    and

The S1 looks pretty expensive (£800) copy of a Keirin frame... begging the question, why not just buy Keirin frame? It'd be the real deal and hold it's value better.

The S2 looks good imo. £350 for a nicely finished steal frame with decent clearances, etc. and cheaper than a BJ Vigorelli. Just a shame they don't have ones with mudguard mounts. Hard to thing of a classicly styled track frame that beats it. I'd be really curious to know what the finish is like up close.

The best thing would be to go into the shop and have a look at them in the flesh. They may even have a built up one you could try.

  • Yeah I think the S1 is overpriced, may as well go the custom built Bob Jackson route at that price... or even ditch steel altogether.

I think I'll take a look at the S2 next time I'm down that way.

  • I wouldnt pay 800 for a new frame with 1" threaded fork, but the s2 looks quite interesting.

  • I've got an S2 and couldn't recommend it highly enough. The lugs and braze ons are beautiful. Rides like a dream too!

Go and have a look, for £350 I don't think you can go wrong.

  • Cool...

Does it take JIS fittings BTW? Using my existing parts would keep the costs down.

  • yes. yes it does.

  • I see.

It really is very tempting... are there any similarly priced JIS frames on the market?

  • the brother frame looks good. but for an extra fiver you get columbus tubing with the s2

  • What's a JIS frame?

  • or jis fittings, how do they work?

  • JIS is simply a standard for various dimensions of the bike. e.g. crown race inner radius.

All my parts are JIS, so on a frame with JIS sizing, everything should 'just fit' nicely.

At least that's what I gathered from Sheldon.

  • Is the decal removable btw?

  • ^^ Surely the only "part" of the frame that is relevant is the headset?

A JIS bb, is only relevant to the spindle, as long as the shell is standard British it'll be fine....

...in which case it doesn't seem like something to worry too much about.

  • Shells come in different lengths too, giving exposed threads on some frames but not others. I'm unsure if this is part of JIS however.

Still, I already have a nice headset, nice JIS bb, nice JIS cranks etc, etc. All this stuff adds up eventually.

  • I really wouldnt choose a frame based on an old headset I already have lying around. AFAIK jis bb & cranks only have to do with the spindle.

  • Anyone have any experience with either of these frames?

GF has an S2 in pearlescent white. It's great. Costs only marginally more than generic 4130 frames like a Brother.

They seem well designed, well made, well painted. She has had no issues with it and it gets lots of comments.

I have no experience with the s2. I believe its a tighter version of the same frame, but in Columbus Spirit. I personally feel £800 is pretty good for a new lugged frame in Spirit. It's very nice tubing.

  • Is the decal removable btw?

    No. It's coated with lacquer.

  • When a nice new headset is over £30, and I already have a nice one, and I'm looking to spend <£600, that's equivalent to roughly a 10% saving.

hmmm....maybe but it also gets you a 725 mercian, or the real deal.

    I know what I'd choose.

But you're right on the S2, and it's good to have a real opinion.

  • bear in mind that the real deal comes mainly in small sizes.
and although mercian is a more reputable builder, spirit is top-end tubing whereas 725 is mid range, so this puts it into perspective (although personally i probably wouldn't go for the s1).

who builds the frames for tokyo fixed?

  • They're built in bulk in the far east or something aren't they?

It's pretty much the same deal as the Goldsprints.

Having chosen a Mercian, I'd also choose a Mercian. Some people probably don't want to wait 5 months though.

They are built in Taiwan. I wouldn't call it bulk. I think less than 100 were built, they aren't bespoke though if that's what you mean.

  • I'd call a containers worth bulk, which is probably what they ordered.

But yeah the main point was that they haven't got Ricky Feather knocking the frames up for them or anything like that.
