My understanding (and I've never ridden cross) is that a higher top tube = quicker and easier to get your shoulder under, so you can make faster transitions.
I shoulder my 29er under the saddle. Dont think I could get my arm into the main triangle. Its tiny.
My CX frame has zero standover. Something that is allways at the front of my mind whenever we venture off-road.
