I agree that spinning is good, but also, road riding is very different to off road anyway, so comparing the two doesn't count for much.
I've always found that too low a gear off road can often make things harder. It can cause you to 'bounce' around a little more due to trying to keep up with an overly spinny gear, both on flats and on standing climbs.
Also where there is a sudden need for acceleration straight after a downhill section...If the gear is too spinny you have to first catch up with the gear before you get any real forward drive.
But as has been said...it's all personal preference. Still, it's interesting to see just how low some people choose to go.
