Stolen bikes

  • /attachments/44717Sad morning! My very good pal Bigpaintbrush has had his beloved Paletti road bike taken from his hallway on Queensdown Road near Hackney Downs. Between 8 and 10 last night some selfish prick crowbarred his letter box, reached in, opened the door and took the bike from the rack on the wall. His best build ever and our much loved conduit for weekend rides. I'm gutted - he must be fucked! Still at least some lowlife theiving scum is 50 quid better off this morning eh? Keep your peepers peeled forum! Let us know if you see it.

The stats: Deep Red 62cm Paletti Lightning (columbus aelle tubing). Campag Recors Groupset except Athena seatpost and stem. Criterium Ergo bars. Gipiemme Techno 416 Wheelset. New Selle Flite saddle.

    Underinsured, overloved, missed already!

A picture from happier times of Bigpaintbrush loving his ride:

Here's the bike in an earlier incarnation with a peculiarly jaunty seat. Still no word or sign of her I'm afraid. Any help much appreciated. God, I miss her...

  • Sorry about the rage face man. Didn't know whether you'd want your mug all over t'internet. Went for a ride yesterday... Was lonely. Thieving scum.

  • That's pretty accurate depiction of how I look at the moment. I'm buying a new bike.

  • More up to date pic.

  • ^ gutted for ya man, fucking thiefing dingbats.

  • waaaaaaah! Red Claud Butler Roubaix 2007 stolen in the City from bike racks on corner of Lombard Street and Clements Lane between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Monday (10/10/2011).

Don't see many of them this colour around - it's quite noticable... which is probably why it went in the first place.

    Help.

  • If anyone sees someone riding a white Genesis with pink handlebars feel free to clothesline them (or, more sensibly, just let me know). My bike was stolen from Vauxhall last night...

  • Stolen, 10 minutes ago from outside tooting bec station

    red 2004 Fuji Track with:
    white deep-v's (rear non-machined)
white spokes (except for one red spoke on each wheel)
    white BLB hubs
    white charge spoon
    white SPDs

(all in stark contrast to the dark dark heart of the scoundrel who stole it).

Please let me know if you see it.

    Gutted.

Major success! Story to follow, but maHOOOsive thanks to katie and tibbs

  • Ha, nice to see a success story!

  • Let's hear it!

  • Awesome news!

  • Hope you took them tea and biscuits ;-p

  • I split the poor constable's coffee all over the table in the interview room. Total props to Tibbs for spotting the damn thing on gumtree and Oli for passing on the info. Was fun! I'll let Aidan tell the story..

  • Aidan, that's bloody amazing. Just waiting for your story. Give!

  • Not sure who spotted my bike, I think it was Tibbs, but within 2 hours of the ad being posted on gumtree, I had messages from Kate and Tibbs on my phone (had the thing on silent. oops!)

I had a look at the listing, and indeed it was my beautiful bike, and in one piece too! The wheels and saddle were still there which is amazing. I gave the guy a buzz and organised to meet him the next day at Bethnal Green. But then Kate said the guy would sell it if anyone else tried to buy it that night.

I wasn't so sure, so to prove her point, Kate called the guy and arranged to meet him at 9:30 that night. What a legend! Off we go, and we call the police quite a few times in an attempt to arrange a car to give us some support, but apparently they don't have enough resources.

So we went and stood in Bethnal Green police station until some police became available. They hide in a park and we go to meet the guy. He turns up, and before I even call one of the police, they've already arrested him!

So I've got the bike back, it had a flat tyre, my rad spoke cards are missing and the battery has gone from the rear light, but it's all there! Massive thanks to Kate and Tibbs, and to other people that I think may be involved in bringing it to light. I owe you all a huge number of beers.

  • Awesome! :]

Is this the one I normally see locked up on the morning train into Clapham?

I think the police may have fucked up masively though- the guy (evidenced by a google search of his phone number) is handling a lot of stolen bikes and probably part of quite a big operation, as the bike was stolen in Balham and sold in Bethnal Green.
When we were giving our statements, I asked if he'd be held overnight so the Cycle Task Force could deal with him tomorrow, and se he couldn't get in touch with anyone to let them know he'd been caught. The constable said "yeah, yeah" then turned to his colleague and said "you'd better seize his phone innit".
Aidan got on *his *phone and guess what? Gumtree ad had been taken down. The kid had been left in a cell on his own with his mobile, so had presumably contacted his paardners in crahme, who could have dismantled quite a large operation quite quickly I'd imagine.

Don't want to crap on your most excellent story. Main thing is you got the bike back and the thieving shit got arrested. The cops almost always get given a hard time here regardless of the results and fact is they helped you get your friends bike back.

Police cells aren't known for their roof gardens or panoramic views, I'd be amazed if the scrote could get a signal even if he did have his phone on him for a bit while in the cell. Think about how many times you can't get a signal while inside a building, then think about how thick the walls are of a typical police cell.

  • Brilliant result!!! Well done one and all. The phone may very well have struggled for a signal as it happens. That particular part of Bethnal Green is a serious dead spot.

  • Hackney appears to be a very bad place to lock a bike up.

  • Brilliant story, good to hear someone get something back AND for popo to be actively helping out, very well done to them as well.

  • Love this story, keeps me hopeful for mine.

  • Great work ladygents. I'm checking gumtree and ebay every other day for my v-sprint.
