Maybe the design is a cunning one- radial fins to shed the heat of the braking track?

I was actually thinking the same. Much like the holes in disc brake discs. I'll not start sanding valleys in to mine just yet though.

I've been using the Reynolds "Blue" brake pads which IMHO are more consistent (less grabby) at all speeds then the swiss stop yellow I used to have .. just my two pence
