another sunday group ride of getting dropped and left for dead. le sigh
Started off nice, but again people from fast group thought they would just tag along on the cafe group, but then kept firing it up to race pace.
Went from carlisle upto nenthead then alston then hartside, lost them good on proper below alston as had to stop for water, and they didn't...... few metres later came across a girl who had just binned her car into a sandstone wall (lift off over steered at the wrong time in a puddle), airbags gone off, if she'd been carrying any more momentum would have gone through the wall and down a 15m drop into a ravine.
Turns out she was a young vet (and a nice one at that) on her way home, must have happened just a few mins before I got there. She was OK, very shaken and on me turning up burst into tears, guess it had just started to sink in. Spent about 10mins with her (free brickman hugs for pretty girl in distress) just straightening her out, calming her down, was overly worried about the car but its just metal & plastic! Then her boss (jag w/charger, should have been a vet!) turned up and all was well.
Anyway, back on trying to hopelessly catch up with Cadel Evans et al, two peeps that I'd been riding with had stopped for me to help shield against wind and rain (30mph and lashing in the face) for the rest of it, lasted about 2 more mile before cold wet legs gave up on me and was reduced to walking pace. lost those guys too. went on for another 2miles at literally walking pace (25-30mins) and no sign of anyone else, weather got worse, so sheltered behind a conveniently placed van for another 30min. gave it another go, but decided it was now stupid to carry on any higher, so high tailed it back down to town thinking I could catch a bus or hitch a lift. Fail. gave up on that and spent 4hrs wiggling down roads I didn't know until eventually found my way back to Carlisle.
So yeah, sunday group rides, always good O_o
