  • Public mockery. Flog the DuraAce and get some proper 24h hubs.

  • I keep breaking rear drive side spokes.....aaarrrrrggghh

  • I dunno if anyone can help, but I've just bought a new aerospoke, an old front one. The guy said it needed a new skewer, but the skewer is too skinny (its the right length though) and I can see the bearings inside the hub, I'm assuming in missing bits off the end and an axel? The bearings have a steel tube that's about 9mm wide between them. Thanks!

  • An old Aerospoke front axle should look a bit like this. If yours looks like it's just missing the silver end caps, get in touch and I'm sure we can do business.

  • Yeah mine doesn't have an axle, so ill def. Get in touch. The whole hub reches about 80mm though (on my wheel) and though they were a standard 100? Or am I missing something else? I've looked everywhere and haven't found anything on it. You can see the bearings in the hub, and all the pictures an other for sale have sealed ends?

  • You can still see the bearing outer races and seal even when the axle and end caps are in place. The axle itself should be about 88mm long, i.e. projecting outside the bearings by about 10mm each side, and the end caps slip over it to provide the 100mm x 9mm dropout mounting and QR skewer bore. If you can, take some pix of what you have just to make sure my axle will fit

  • Hopefully It loads and this helps :)

  • Yes, you have the axle but you're missing the end caps. PM on the way.

  • @freezing77 + moth.Thanks fellas,worked out all right.

Mavic cxp33 rims arent the best the choice for a newbie wheelbuilder.cant see the offset drilling pattern for the woods and the trees.

Taking your rim/wheelbuilding problems down to your LBS is always a good option.they'd give you lots of free advice,or maybe even ask if you could watch one of their mechanics put a wheel together.they'd talk you through the whole process and you'd learn a lot of valuable tips.

As a side note,Halfords said they'd true my wheel for me only it would take half an hour, yet cost 20 quid! One hours work on a bike-40!!!!!

  • Are there/is there anyone offering wheel building courses in the new year?

  • I think me & Kris from Cyclelab are doing a few weekend courses in early Feb or so. TBC.

  • dura-ace 36h road hub laced radially with Sapim CX-ray to an 18 hole Velocity aero head rim.

I want a light weight but strong, fairly aero wheel for the road bike, advice pls?

Although the C24 version will also be better in all areas than your proposed mutant.

  • out of my price range I'm afraid, plus I'm looking for something a little more classic looking, to go on a 753 frame with 7410 series dura ace

  • Make your mind up, do you want "light weight but strong, fairly aero" or "classic looking"? In the 7410 era, road race bikes came with 32h groupset hubs and Mavic SSC (pro) or GP4 (the rest of us) rims. Open Pro CD is close enough for a classic looking build with daily driver practicality. An Aerohead with 18 spokes will not be anywhere near normal people's definition of strong.

  • I have an open sport to ambrosio zenith (campag) rear wheel that has done less than 500 miles - unfortunately I have managed to ding the rim in a pothole so no matter how many times I re-true it, it goes out within 60k and is pretty exciting/annoyinng for the last part of a 100k ride.

The hub is still completely fine and it seems like a waste to throw away something that is worth £55.

I've not been that impressed with the open sports and PX have a nice deal on dt 465's. My question is if I asked a wheel builder to switch one rim for the other, would they have to use new spokes/nipples etc? (I know they would probably have to cut them as the ERD's would be different - 606 for the Mavics and 599mm for the dt's)

Am I mad or shall I just buy another open sport rim (only £20 on CRC) and get my lbs to switch them around?

  • You could shop around for other rims which will be a drop-in replacement for Open Sports, there are several options if you just google it
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ERD+606mm
And depending on where your nipples currently lie on the spokes, you might get away with up to 3mm difference, so down to 603 or up to 609.

  • Swapping rims over is standard operating procedure, I'mon my second front CXP33 on the commuter with same hubs spokes and rims

  • If you commute in London any wheel with less than 28 spokes is a complete waste of time in my experience

  • erd's seem to vary depending on which internet source you're reading - why dont rim manufacturers just publish it properly on their websites

how much do you normally pay? Or do you do it yourself?

They're 32 spoke rims - and they're not for commuting, just winter wheels for the Sunday bike.

Think I might just buy a pair of the 465's from PX while they're £30 each, and keep them for another build.. Then just swap the open sport rim out for a new one- £21 is stupidly cheap really.

  • DIY; you just tape the rims together side by side and move each spoke across one by one so no need to relace the whole thing. Then tension and true.

  • not sure I'm competent enough to do that. Wish I was

Was quoted 35 quid by a bike shop today.. seems a bit steep for one wheel

  • Arup on here £20

    He's really fucking good.
