Tubs

  • Anyone can deal with tubs, no more difficuly than dealing with clinchers really. The skill/experience part comes with not getting glue smeared all over the side of the rim or the sidewall of the tub. You should see my first few efforts....

  • Morning

Is anyone running tubs on their road machines? I know they have their drawbacks but i have an old road bike id like to keep original spec if possible. Im on the Vittoria Rallies ATM (much cheapness) and was wondering what tub tape and pump other tub freaks carry for back up?

    Ta

  • Thanks Aroogah!

  • Ran tubs for one day, got a flat, have now given up.

  • If you do want to run tubs, I'd highly recommend getting something else other than the Rallys. They're lumpy around the valve hole, cut up easily and don't grip well in the wet. The Continental Sprinter is a good general riding/commuting tub, and will last longer than a couple of Rallys.

I take a pre-glued spare and a can of Vittoria Pit Stop with me.

  • Cheers Ste, yeah I noticed the lumpyness around the valve, had trouble with the first but the second one stuck smoother around the valve. Used glue initially but will take tape/pitstop/co2 for roadside repairs. Ill check out the conti sprinters thanks! Moved out of London and am riding country lanes in Kent, less glass but more cars doing 60mph.

  • I've done two rides on tubs now, so am therefore an expert.

Well, maybe not, but I have some first impressions, and they are wholly positive so far.

I've not got a p_nctr on either of the rides I have done (both North Downs), which (when it happens) will possibly change my mind a little.

I have been taking a pre-stretched tub and a role of tub tape with me, just in case.

I have got a can of pit-stop, but read upthread that once you use it the tub is dead, so I'd rather change the tub completely and get the dead one repaired- they are not cheap.

Depends on the tub I guess, repaired tubs can be quite lumpy unless you're experienced at it. I'd take the hit and ride a pit stop'd Vittoria or Conti until it gave up the ghost, FMB or Dugast I'd be sending off for repair.

  • Vittoria Corsa Evo CX 320- pit-stop it?

You can get them for ~£40 on eBay, I suppose that if once repaired they are rubbish then that puts a different complexion on things.

  • You should have a go at the Mavic Griplink/Powerlink combo. Well good.

Depends on how good you are at repairing them. I've not attempted repairing one yet myself, but those I know that have end up with a lump around were they've repaired the tub. I dare say if you're good at it you though you can end up with an almost like new tub.

Pretty good thread on repairing tubs there, although fdegroove sums it up nicely in post 10 - Used to repair tubs, but now just uses liquid latex.

Are they similar to Vittoria's ? They're made by Lion Tires in Thailand who make tires for Vittoria amongst others

  • Exactly the same as the old Vittorias (290 tpi) but without the herringbone tread

  • Be interesting if the Michelins have got a good rubber compound (doesn't cut up, grips in the wet). The casings that Vittoria use are great, it's just the rubber compound that lets them down

Took half the day off today. Went out for a litte ride to Seasalter on the old tubs (only a 10m round trip)
130psi, no punctures but narrowly avoided a nail in the road. It was bloody windy you can tell the weathers going to change.

Stopped in a field for a piss on the way back.

  • Though it has been recommended that I dont, I have just taken the plunge and ordered my Tufo Elite tubs for my recently purchased sprint rims on Bayliss Hubs.
I couldnt bare to split them,(nobody wanted to trade) so I now intend to commute on them only armed with Tufo extreme sealant.

  • Brave.

  • Stupid!
I will let you know how i get on

  • In Yes Minister they wold have described it as Courageous...

  • What a lovely word, underused I think

  • good luck brave falcon, carry some spares.

  • Or carry the number of a taxi company.

  • Been cycling on tubs for 30 years and never had a puncture ;)
