  • well, organisation is started sober with good intentions, than decisions have to be made, what ales to offer, guest ales, what food to have, well, all these things need careful thought and of course fairly extensive testing prior to the event ! so the sobriety level does change, especially when the choice is hard.............

  • has anyone heard of armourtex doing a metallic flake powder coat finish? I know it's possible, just curious if it's been done though.

perhaps this has been answered already but i couldnt be arsed reading the whole thread!...

YES.....though its a metallic lacquer on top of whatever colour you choose..

i did up and old Holdsworth cyclone for a mate last year...
Armourtex were good value (£90 from memory for polished dropouts, 1 colour and met.lacquer) efficient ( ie quick turn around) and friendly....cant ask for more really...

the powder coating looks REALLY good....maybe not as flamboyant as wet spray, but damn its durable!....my mate doesnt seem to ever clean the bike ( grrr ) and leans it against lamposts with little care....yet its held up VERY well

    cant reccomend Armourtex enough....

  • That's an old question answered! We have an armortex thread now.

  • Sorry if that has been answered already, but I can't find any contact details (especially an email to send images?) of Mario Vaz? Where exactly is he based?

Also, do I have to hand over the frame prepared for painting or do his prices include the blast-off/burn-off of the old paint?

Anyone have an idea of how much he's probably charging these days for the whole job including a respray in pearlescent white?

  • haha ok sorry, didn't realise he even has a website

    So mainstream, innit?!...

No need to prepare frame...just take all the bits off
Whole job about 65 quid last time I checked

  • Anyone used Vaz for a carbon fork?

  • He can do it, I've seen it it there. Forks and frames.

  • Thinking of getting my Boardman F&F done, alloy frame and carbon fork.

  • Whole job about 65 quid last time I checked

    ^for single colour.

This was £110 with transfers, (including fork.)

  • Because it's 2 colors^, right?

  • And lug lined. All fancy, me. His brother removed a braze-on, but I don't remember how much that was.

  • I paid £98 for my Carlton, lug lined, decals (x4) and single color.

  • It's not powder-coating, it's enamel.
There's a huge difference in temperatures.
So much that PC cannot take any sort of decals due to heat.

pc can masked with proper mask, it's rife in production lines.
You just have to keep the right order (from light to dark) on
paint layers and use fine coats to avoid adding weight.

i 'm sorry about the frame, it's very difficult to be wrong so much
in color temperature with plain colors. You are right to be upset
but if you have give him a sample or a RAL reference you will
    be more accurate.

if you like to remove vinyl stickers, it's easy, use a sand paper (1200)
to reveal their edges. A bluish set will work...

ps: sorry, i just see that was months ago...

  • one more mario vaz question:

just acquired a nice old romet track frame for just 75 quid, and this is now supposed to get a proper spraypaintjob.
the thing is, the frame currently has a layer of old black powdercoating on, and that seems rather 'soft' to me as its not chipped but full of scratches. how would mario vaz get rid of that? does he have a pyrolysis oven like armortex? ...as I doubt you get that stuff off with sandblasting?

By the way, when he does use sandblasting, is he actually going through all the hand-sanding of the whole frame afterwards? (as I imagine the blasting leaves the tube surfaces very rough).

  • Yes, he has the oven. And the sandblasting cabin. Can he do it? Ask him - zeroseven956 314 two1six.
    ;)

  • anyone anyone had a frame resprayed from Vaz recently?

how does he compare - finish/ price wise with armourtex?

  • Armourtex does powder coat. Vaz does wetsprays.

Powdercoat is more durable, but doesn't have as nice a finish. The one paint job I've seen in the flesh from vaz was fine. This thread's only 8pp long, so it shouldn't take long to see what the work he does looks like. Equally there is an armourtex thread you can look through to see their work. My frame was fine, but after seeing the light I probably would get another PC paint job.

If you're happy to pay a bit more for wet paint, then Colourtech do plenty of professional frame builders paint jobs and also do 2pac paint which from what I've read is like a wet paint finish but more durable... altho you have less choice of colours...I think...

  • "Wetsprays" - read enamel, that needs baking too. Only at a much lower temperature = not so great avoiding chipping and scratching.

  • Mario resprayed my old chipped/paint splattered (didn't see the patch on the road till too late) Orbit frame in June. One colour (enamel), no lugs, £65. Done in a week. I'm pretty pleased but not done this before so can't compare. Most people who've seen it think he's done a decent job. He was suggested by one of the guys at Brixton Cycles who stripped the bike and put it together again for me once he was done. The new paint job is tougher than the original, that's for sure.

  • ^^Yeh sorry, that probably wasn't that clear.

Also worth noting that powder coat is only going to be one colour. I'd only go PC if it's welded, or filet brazed. But that's me. Also if it makes a differences, they are in completely different endz.

  • does he sandblast the frame aswell?

cranking > £65 includes the wetspray and a clear coat?

quite impressed with this paint job...
