I think the debate going on here is pretty pointless and it is all down to your own tastes.
pretty much sums it all up

Italian BB threading is a great reason to avoid Italian steel frames :)
I agree! Although it's not happened to me since :0) Needed to soak it in penetrating oil the last time I took it all out for a clean.

don't let scoble see that, it'd be sacrilege to him

Modern Group on vintage steel is the way to go. After getting rid of the downtube shifters on my gazelle, climbing has been enjoyable!

Does the stiffness og the modern cranks etc, expose inherent flex in the frame?
Genuinely curious.

Fan of new gear on older frames, but nothing too extreme!
This was from 4 1/2 years ago, looks a little bit different nowdays, but you get the idea.

This may sound a bit odd for such a small detail - I think one of the reasons Campag looks better on older bikes because the cranksets still retain a traditional looking hole in the centre of the crank whereas shimano have that alien like one piece job which just looks a bit wrong. Campag's silver is a pretty traditional affair whilst the silver of Shimano components tend to be more of a blue/grey hue.
Also, the Campag ergo levers are a much more classic shape, whereas the Shimano one's are just fugly.
Heres a picture illustrating my points (though admittedly not a properly vintage frame)

7800 has the 'shaded' metal-7700 has the silver type finish and the crank detail is not too far from the 7400 style, hence my choice on my Spiral conic -

maybe just me but i think that they are the best platform to see
big differences with modern parts. When i was install centaur carbon (square) on my old sl, i was notice
a huge difference in stiffness against my old chorus alu.
With alu ultra torgue on my new sl doesn't feel like carbon, but
i feel a lot more stiffer the BB area.I can't describe the enormous difference that i have when i use for a day
my eurus wheelset... against my "classic" MA3 (36-32 centaur hubs).
Looks like shit on the bike but there are grey fulcrum for those that like
their effect.http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_roHwv-S6dt8/TFNFwFZ51SI/AAAAAAAAAQs/PPeFChgqVrQ/s1600/Michaello_new15.jpg

I did notice the difference in stiffness with my ultratorque crankset, I'd says it feel a lots less flexy (but still nowhere near as stiff as an alu/carbon/modern steel frame).

I recently serviced the Bob Jackson. Sorted out the headset play, and put new lighter stiffer wheels on it.
There always been a little flex to feel, when climbing. But with the stiffer set-up, its more noticable. So the upgrade almost feels like a downgrade.

I really like how my BJ Vigorelli climbed. It could be provoked into getting a bit noodley when you get out the saddle, but that's just more reason to stay seated or smooth.
I'd rather have low q-factor, lightish cranks like Campag Pista on that bike than Sram Omnium because to me that's how that bike was supposed to be ridden. A different frame and it's be a different matter.

Thats kinda what I'm getting at. Sometimes its not about getting the best bits, but the most suitable bits. I'm not going to claim I've ever flexed my Campag pistas though.
The examples on this thread are well nice though.

Yeah, that would work. Looks mental, but would be good.
