  • Ditchling look like the incline in Clerkenwell compare to Yorkshire, and I rode the hill on a bicycle totally unsuitable for climbing (Moulton).

Even less suitable than brakkless fixeh skidder?

  • "Fine with Ditchling" hah! I still don't think I'm that great at hills, but I hope to do marginally better than last time when I barely even tried and walked the whole way up.

  • Even less suitable than brakkless fixeh skidder?

A brakelessixikidders would be a lots easier to climb than a small wheels bicycle with suspension.

In fact, despite it having touring gear, I'd gladly go fixed on a 700c bicycle.

  • What happened to pops1207 and splat? They were the first ones to express interest in the ride and now they've gone awol?

  • how about the "fixie skid witches ride to brighton?"

  • and do you lot hate your fucken knees

    i am on 64.4 GI

  • how about the "fixie skid witches ride to brighton?"

^ he is referring to the potential title change Scoot referred to two pages ago btw.

  • how about the "fixie skid witches ride to brighton?"

My friend will be on an old specialized hard rock, a heavy mtb with gears yesiknow... hopefully she wont feel intimidated by the big wheeled bikes with 1 gear towering above her.

we'll see, maybe I'll regret it for the odd moment up hill...

  • ooh well if I come I can be on my trusty old tank of a mtb too [withgearsmumblemumble]

  • how about the "fixie skid witches ride to brighton?"

Ha! I am descended from the Pendle Witches.

This is shaping up nicely! Ace to have so many people along : )

Am going to do a recce in the next couple of days - is everyone happy with the route used last year?

I'll be on my trusty Plug, running the standard 42:16...maybe I should make like Scoot and try something else? Spin to win?

  • according to Sheldon, 42x16 is actually 69.

Scoot! you misled me you... shake fist in air

  • Hmm.. seems many of you think Ditchling's a doddle on a fixie which makes me wonder if I'm fit enough to ride with this group. Crawled up it with help of my granny ring last Sunday and even then I thought about stopping at a couple of points. Don't expect it to be any easier next time. Mulling it over...

  • Yeah am talking the talk but could go either way on the day.... like it says this is gonna be a leisurely ride with plenty of tea & cake stops. Please don't be put off by our (my) bravado!

  • I almost definitely won't get up Ditchling fixed. I don't care though, walking is fun too

  • according to Sheldon, 42x16 is actually 69.

Scoot! you misled me you... shake fist in air

Lol! Sorry, I was using this chart which I found randomly on google, which clearly says 70.9! Is it wrong?

  • @cranking - dude, I didn't even get 1% up it riding fixed as my legs were jelly by that point. And you got all the way to the top without stopping! Bullcrap you're not fit enough to come on this ride!!

  • That's because I had gears Scoot, lots of low ones. And towards the end I was crawling so slowly I might as well have walked.

By the way these numbers are doing my head in. One of you needs to explain this on the 1st. Ok still in, I think.

  • Scoot, it's more complicated as tyres size, cranks length and wheel size play a factor, the chart you use is rather simplified, I use Sheldon's, add your crank length, wheel and tyres size and it give you a better calculation;

  • crank length changes nothing

  • (checking sheldon).

    yeah you're right, fair do.

  • Clefty have you got elevation gain information for that route? Link for gpsies no work reet good on my work computer.

  • crank length changes ) but we talkin gi innit.

  • Surely this thread has had enough gear ratio talk by now, no? Ed and Malaysian, there is a women's gear ratio thread if you really want to talk about gear inches in the ladies' forum.

Are we stopping off at the pub at Turners Hill for beer?

    Is this what you're after?
