got engine all back together tonight. fired first go and after a bit of grumpyness and lifter ticking it all calmed down and now purrs like a kitten.
however, gearbox not engaging or circulating fluid. looks like i didn't engage convertor on pump splines and most probably smash the pump centre. yay!! gearbox now has to come out and learning time on auto's. supposedly relatively easy thing to replace. stupid cars!
