I saw that tandem on MP. Very nice and a bargain, I think.
BTW, how about this 653 ?
Or this EUR 25.- touring bike ?
Or a pretty new track frame ?

^Nice one! Very kind also of you to offer it at cost.. Too big for me, but someone should snap that up!
I just picked up a 753 '77/'78 Champion Mondial which I first thought was "only" 531.. I initially bought it to strip, sell the Super Record stuff that is on it, make a little money and whack on the Shimano 600 Arabesque gruppo and moustachebar I have lying around to make my GF a nice bike.. But now I know it is 753 I'm starting to doubt and think it might be a bit of a waste of such a rare frame.. Original paint too.. -

Any thoughts? I didn't know Gazelle used Columbus tubes
-
• #982
Doesn't look like a champion mondial to me. Both mine have the rear derallier cable stop on the top of the chain-stay. The seat stays don't look like they are wrap-over either.
Ask for a close up of the bottom of the BB shell, it should have "Gazelle" and a serial number stamped on it.

Yes, Gazelle has built some Columbus frames, but these are extremely rare. Late 1970s or so. Check out old catalogues.
This is definately not a (Dutch) Gazelle. -

Gazelle did use Columbus tubing for a while but those were beautiful looking bikes with great lugs like this one: http://fivenineclimber.com/bikes/gazelle/aa_frames/columbus.htm

They offered a Columbus frame for a while, but stopped with it.
Columbus frames had to be soldered with silver, while all Reynolds 531 could be brazed with brass.
Silver: more expensive, need more skills thus more experiences staff, could not be done with the big sets of torches Gazelle was using in their brazing "street", need better/tighter fit between lugs and tubes.
Instead of columbus, Gazelle continued with Reynolds 753, which required the same skills and handling as Columbus, but was a bit lighter and fashionable at that time.
Perhaps the fact that Gazelle and Reynolds both belonged to the Tube Investment group also played a role.
Later, Gazelle made some prototypes with Columbus tubing (SLX, Max, MS), which never made it to production. A friend of mine still has the SLX somewhere in his garbage as a relique.
After I left the company, there was a model with Columbus Foco tubing, but I can't tell more about that. Just brows old (post 1990) catalogues.Enough history lessons for today ;-)

Just picked up this Mondial(1980). Still in excellent condition because the bike has not been used for about 15 years.

I actually ended up buying it, £41. Sure isn't light! The seat stays do wrap over and the brake bridge is similar(I think) so I'm guessing that's where the confusion came from.
It does have a Gazelle Headbadge though, which has been poorly painted round by the looks of things. Perhaps a lesser Gazelle?

The grey bike from Ebay is definately not a dutch Gazelle.
They've never made frames with that kind of capping on the ends of the stays (near the dropouts). This is straight. Gazelle always used round/domed stay ends.
Could be a good and nice frame though. -

Let's see a pic of that brake bridge!
-
• #992
I just bought myself one of those. Was not cheap, but they are so beautiful I just had to have one.
-
• #993
Just to confirm: all Gazelles should have English bottom bracket threads, right?
-
• #994
Yes, always.
Only exceptiones could be:
- in thread was stripped and chased with italian thread
- low end frames with press fit bearings
- in thread was stripped and chased with italian thread

le voila! just like on the Zullos. a beautiful groupset
-
• #996
hello all! i have a champion mondial. I'm after a new BB, just wondering if i can use italian threading or am i after english? also... what is better? cup and cone or cassette? i think i might just get a cassette because it's easier and i don't have time to clean it all the time. but i do like the idea of making time to clean it...

• #997
Jacob, scroll up and read five posts above yours, you lazy bastard.
-
• #998
yeah, i read that just as i posted it. sorry. but what do people reccommend BB wise? cassette?
-
• #999
Jeez, wanna kickstart that project? ;) It came of off my '94 Gazelle Exception, I swapped to Campag Chorus, fancied a change.. Well, the intent is there to swap, but the Chorus headset doesn't fit (very tight on headtube and bottom race to small fo fork).. I'm now swapping the headset to a fitting Stronglight needle bearing one (better anyway) but I broke my homemade cupextractor alu tube because the cup is in that tight.. #coolstorybro

^ I'm terrible sorry but I didn't understand a single word of that.
Anyway, saw a lovely Gazelle on Sunday in Covent Garden with an odd blue plastic basket/tray front rack lash-up. However, the frame was very nice, one of the later lugged (90s IIRC) Formula 525 numbers in cactus green and turbo yellow.
