what software is it? do you need a newish machine or is a few years old ok? if even g5 is ok I can get you a mac pro for cheap, we have loads of them at work just standing around
otherwise, unless you already have a decent monitor i'd get a macbook pro
(and i certainly wouldn't go down the build-yourself-a-pc-but-run-osx-on-it, especially not if you're making music)
thanks for the advice kboy. "job" might be glorifying it a bit. basically i'm trying to become self sufficient in producing music i licence to tv rather than relying on others to record me. i'm starting with tracktion 3 and logic. i'm confident i'll be competent on both pretty quickly as i'm familiar with backseat driving various DAWs over the years. it's just a case of learning the how to set up projects and all the keyboard short cuts etc.
i've been meaning to do this for years and have used not having (or being able to afford) a mac as an excuse not to bother. finally convinced the missus i "need" to spend the cash on a new mac to get this cottage industry up and running. decision made, and while i'm saving my pennies, i decided to invest on some hardware and start learning the software on my decrepit laptop. however, the usb audio interface i've bought won't play ball with my flagging pc. the urgency is no greater than before i guess, but having glimpsed the possibilities of how simple it is to make music this way i'm double keen to get some kind of working mac setup running so i can get on with it!
you're right in that a new mac book pro is the plan, but i've got a wedding to pay for in march so i can't be spending a grand till after then.
you're also right, i am wary of going down the home-build route as i'm pretty much i'm IT-phobic. i don't have a monitor at the moment but i'm sure i could rustle one up if a suitable and affordable tower was in the offing. thanks again for the advice and very kind offer. how much are we talking for one of yr redundant pros?
