  • Might be worth making enquiries at UCL. They've been doing a lot of refurbishing recently i.e. throwing out very nice fittings and replacing them with crap that happens to have more built in electrical points.

Thanks! Any particular department best/most prone to refurb?

  • would it be worth buying the starwars blueprint book (limited to 5000 numbered copies) not opening the slipcase and leaving it in my parents safe for a year before sticking on ebay?

by buy i mean ordering it from forbidden planet and hoping you get the chance to buy one?

  • Again, you have to have an account for them to count it- and even then, only small amounts.

I just take some bags to my local PO and the woman there swaps them for me. No account on anything. Last time I went I changed £15 in coppers.

  • Most of the Morrisons supermarkets I have been in have self service tills where you can just dump coins in rather than feed them into a slot. Have purchased many a pizza and much wine by this method.

    All self service tills do.

So long as it's numbered 1-100 and the thousand dollar version.

I don't really know how it works. I think there may be designated sales of old stuff (vaguely remember some being advertised on the internal email lists), but I reckon personal enquiries are worth a go. Library services have definitely been replacing huge old leather topped tables recently, but that's not what you're after. Things are constantly changing across campus though. The customer services team for the maintenance division could be a good place to start: efdservices@ucl.ac.uk

Speculative enquiries at any school/FE/HE institution could be worth a shot…

bit more of punt though. i'll stick to premium bonds.

  • No they don't. Most of then have coin slots. Fuck standing there buying a bottle of wine with copper coins feeding them in one by one. The machines in Morrisons are different. There is a cup section you just drop all your coins in. Like fucking magic it is, well almost.

You just throw the money in well I do and its fine.

  • Right- I want some worktops, hardwood, reclaimed/recycled.

Where in London would be able to provide these?

Something like old laboratory worktops would be great, or similar.

    Concrete

  • I'd considered concrete, but I'd prefer wood I think.

  • You throw the money into a coin slot? All in one go? WTF are you smoking?

None of the ones i've used have had a slot tesco ones (near me) I've used have a a half funnel you poor the cash in to, Morrisons have the whole with a belt at the bottom but does like multiple coins.

  • Sainsbury's still use slots as do some Tesco's. Morrisons machines tend to crash, funny to see the Windows screen of death coming up

  • Asda had slots on their 1st generation self check outs, the latest ones have a funnel you can just pour handfuls of change into. My local has both kinds. If you don't need the money right now, self check out is the way to go; no time-wasting bagging it up and no rip-off Coinstar charge.

  • Thats something I have never noticed. I thought they were all the same.

    I will look next time.

  • Dammit

I get my veneer here - croydon, not cheap though:

nice diaphragm, half a lemon not good enough?

  • Sainsburys Angel has one for sure, I used it last month.

surely you can just take your coins to the counter in a bank, that way they don't charge you and you get real cash....

Ed, you are redundant as you have been usurped by an angel.

  • Anybody know if any of those Coinstar machines are still in existence?

Their web site says that there are machines at New Cross Gate sainsburys and Asda on OKR but they weren't there when I visited.

I've got a very large number of coins that I'd like to change.

there is definitely a Coinstar at the huge sainsburys at Becton as I used it last week.

  • You can count coins pretty fast with a bit of motivation.

If you have accurate scales, you can count by sorting and weighing. You can even mix 1p & 2p and 5p & 10p coins as those pairs have masses in the same ratio as their values.

  • And you no longer have to magnetically sort the pre-92 bronze from the post-92 copper clad steel, since commodity prices have fallen back and the old ones are now worth more as coin than as scrap :-)

  • £114 in hand, moneybox empty. Score.

  • I can't remember how to switch between v3 and 2 of the site. For some reason, I can't give rep in v2. I switched to 3 to dish out some love but can't switch back. Being scared of change, I prefer the old version. Help please.

  • Thanks, Oliver.

  • You're welcome.

  • Can anyone point me to a good route around the North Downs, starting from richmond park?
