Personally I don't think you should ask if anyone else is going. The whole point of the game is to beat other players to the tag and move the game forwards.
I like the surprise of clicking on the thread to see the old tag gone and a new one put up. I don't want around waiting for a "dibs'd" tag to be done.
Nice touch.
