  • i know what you are saying EDSCOBLE... but i just hope its gonna make things happen... cant say its not appealing enough to people to make them go the extra length... eitherway.. thats what ill pay for that ride back... too much time spent putting it together..

  • I have had that chain for about 4-5 years and never lost a bike when it was locked using it, so believe me when i say i too totally believe in those locks...

were the older NY's not vunreable to the bic pen method of opening locks? or was yours a flat key? ..just trying to offer an idea to the lock mystery cause thats a strange one, anyway hope you get it back!

  • Nick, if I see it you'll be getting it back free of charge irrespective of how, or even if, it was locked.

Fingers crossed it turns up soon mate.

Don't wory - ed is just thinking about the things he'd do for £500.

Ed would do anything for £500.

    Anything.

Never mind the bike. For that money you could just ride ed to work.

    Bareback.

  • Sorry to hear about your bike, i hope you get it back (and that it is a decent person who waves the reward too), have you had any leads from the poster?

I always find it horrible that GA2G and the lock police are always so fast to jump on people who have had their bikes stolen in the hope that they can say "I told you so" when it wasn't treble locked to a highly specced rack in a secure location. Sounds like you did all you could, unfortunately at the end of the day a determined thief will manage to steal you bike if they really want too.

    Hope you get it back.

    1+

  • I had seen/ heard about 'some' of those locks getting opened using pens and what not... Never saw it happen to this particular one. Perhaps it was that way... i will never know. Maybe i should have updated the lock a while back... hindsight isn't what i live by though.

The newer versions of those locks are different in shape so i will be no doubt getting myself another new version... unless some one on here reckons i'm letting myself back into the fire by doing so...

    THE LUSH:
Thanks! Its this kind of response that i love to read... not because of saving my hard earned cash... just wicked seeing solid honest folk fighting for the greater good...

    OMAR:
Couldn't agree more to some of what you are saying. At the same time though, its also knowledge that others like to absorb about whats safe and whats not... Some tactics applied in how those questions are asked might be nice.. but CARE... if it helps someone in choosing the right lock and learning through other peoples falls in how to look after their sh%t then fair do's. - Thanks for your kind comments anyway Omar!! (no leads as such - other than a few bikes have turned up at the 'Cash X Change' on holloway road over the last few weeks that were returned to their owners after being stolen and sold there. Can only hope eh!

OmarLittle, excuse me, but what exactly are you talking about? Where and when have I jumped on anyone and told them*** I told you so***? I don't take part in the Stolen Bikes thread, except either long ago, or extremely rarely. My interest in this is to otherwise advise others on locks in the Locks That Work thread. That advice is frequently updated, as new situations come to light. If the lock he used was deficient in any way, I would post it in that thread.

I made no attempt to ridicule or put down butter, but only sought to establish exactly how his lock/locking method was defeated.

In fact, I had believed that when butter said he used the Kryptonite New York Lock, he'd meant the the 16mm U-Lock, but I have since found out that this name also applies to Kryptonite's series of chains.

butter locked his bike up in the best method possible....this is very clear. However it was the thickness of the lock or the chain that provided the vulnerabilities. That said, I know of one person on this forum that had their bike stolen when locked with the best lock there is, the Fahg Mini. But it was in a secluded place, and the thieves had hours to work on the lock, undisturbed.

No lock is unbreakable, but I only hoped to learn more, so as to amend the Locks That Work thread, if necessary.

  • you often see people offering £50 or £100 cash for return or info leading to return of a bike but the thief would often get that much for higher end stuff easily anyway, so the potential of £500 for them might lure it out, or be tempting enough for one person to rat on another.
Hope you get it back. Sounds like you had it locked up good, but somebody was determined to have it, and at the end of the day the lock just buys you time.
You generally get about a week to find it until its shifted on and the chances of seeing it again rapidly diminish.

  • Like this (same colours) but with with road tyres and a black rear rack:

It was locked near the Cotswold Camping shop in Southampton St, Covent Garden. Left at about 8.30 this morning, found stolen about 9.30 tonight.

It's Catydid's bike - she's reporting it to the Met right now.
She's still in the nursery, so PM or call me - my number's in the thread.

    Thanks
    Steve

  • Is it just me or does there seem to be a bit of an upsurge in bike thefts? Im a cycle instructor and 3 of my trainees have had their bikes stolen in as many weeks, which I've never experienced before. And I had one nicked too- all 4 from Highbury/ Finsbury Park area. At least 3 if not all 4 of these thefts were from inside residential buildings.
I've encouraged all of my trainees to report their thefts to the police (thinking that accurate figures are important for the police to be able to prioiritise issues and know what's the state of play), don't really know what else we can do?

  • Katie-Coo, point them in the direction of the Locks That Work thread, on this forum. Or, just copy, paste and print the first post of that thread, and give it out. Its not a guarantee that their bikes will never be stolen, but it is a guarantee that thieves will want to steal other bikes before touching those locked with the locks in that list. Hope that helps.

Also, summer always brings on greater thieving of bikes.

  • GA2G.. im not offended in the slightest mate... Happy to let people know how and what i used for security.

Just to confirm too, I have checked my old keys (as i couldnt remember off the top of my head what shape the key was) and my one is a flat style key so probably eliminates the chances of the famous bic biro trick. So go figure... some kind of lock houdini or a hench guy with a set of industrial sized bolt cutters.

BRICKMAN... Thats precisely it... You throw a bit more at stuff thats of good grade and you have better chances. fingers crossed... but yeah also the sad truth that if i dont see anything over the next 2-4 weeks then i doubt i ever will.

  • I think its important to keep the flow of information goingg, on what does and doesnt work lock wise.

Shit luck Butter I'll keep the bike in mind when doing my usual inter webs time wasting.

Really need to get the image of riding Ed bareback to work out of my mind now. Where'd you put the panniers?

  • Really need to get the image of riding Ed bareback to work out of my mind now. Where'd you put the panniers?

Ed has built-in uber-tanium pannier rack mounts, you'll find them on the sides of the lower ribcage.
Some say behind his facial hair there is no chin, but a compass & map leading to everywhere.

  • Hope you find it, butter.

  • Had my cannondale killer v in bright red stolen at the weekend just built it with mavic cross max ceramic rims rode it once there is a 200 pound reward if found they also stole my kids diamondback alt bmx in green.

  • I had my cannondale killer v stolen and i was willing to pay 200 to get it back. Its bright red and light as, if anyone has any ideas where it might turn up can you let me know.

    How was it locked?

This question hasn't been answered yet, and its pretty important to the rest of us on here. We now know what it was locked with, but not how it was locked. Was it......

    (Prefered)

    1. Through the frame and rear wheel and to immovable object.
    2. Front wheel removed and locked to rear wheel and frame, and post/railings.
    3. Gap in lock shackle filled by pedal crank along with frame and rear wheel.

    (Bad ideas)

    1. Locked bike to nothing solid; just the bike locked and leaned up against something.
    2. Locked only front wheel, thinking you might return quickly enough, so that nothimng would happen.
    3. Locked frame only, and not the wheels - leaving huge gap for bottle jack.

Wish you luck on getting it back, but the lock you used has never been reported defeated on this forum, IF the correct locking procedures were used. This would be a first, unless of course, it was not locked as in 1., 2., or 3......with 3, being the best, and most recommended method.
    .

  • eyes peeled, I wouldent take the cash either. hope you get it back

  • I had my bright red cannondale killer v stolen from my garden shed at the weekend only seen one more frame like mine it was built with mavic cross max ceramic wheels and was single speed i was gutted and even more now my insurance won't pay.
