Brooks Saddles

  • I have one of these:

They are made in Italy by a factory which shuts down for six weeks over the summer.

This is not unusual among Italian manufacturers.

Fox, that's slightly random knowledge, I'm afraid to say I have no knowledge of the working patterns of the manufacturers of any of my household light fittings...

  • Does the whole superglue/ball bearing thing actually work? I'm looking at getting a nice saddle but the thought of it getting stolen is putting me off.

  • A megasaurus (mega-sore-arse)

    But seriously, damn it hurts...

  • should be more, i reckon

  • I thought it was quite a funny one...

    Josh you grumpy soandso...

  • it's more like the saddle breaks you in, let's be honest

  • In Soviet Russia...

  • Or you could buy a saddle that is comfortable from the first time you ride it? And is waterproof? etc...

Brooks. I've never understood. Nice accessories and bags mind.

  • Brooks pain is weakness leaving the body. through the arse.

  • Brooks. I've never understood.

I must've owned a dozen saddles and nothing came close to my B17.

  • A megasaurus (mega-sore-arse)

    But seriously, damn it hurts...

    Roar? (raw)

  • Roar? (raw)

    someone called me?

  • long live brooks

  • I am thinking of getting a B17s for my bike, I am not sure if I shall go for the black or honey. I like the honey colour much more but I am not sure if it'd go well with the rest of the bike as the honey might be too light and would stand out like a sore thumb. What do people think?

    Here is the pic

it current has a Brooks on it but I want to put it onto my other bike hence need another brooks.

    Cheers

  • I really really really want a brown or black b17 on a winter bike, regular tensioning and leather care should keep it in good nick despite the shite weather, yes?

  • I never tension mine and it's been day in and day out for about 3 years, still in good condition. I use the Proofide once every... erm... whenever I remember. Just keep it dry, take a saddle cover with you for rainy days. But it will hurt your backside for a while initially, now mine ride like a dream.

  • Sounds ideal to me, thanks

  • Going to put a Brooks on my new tourer since my trusty B17 has served me so well, but I was thinking about a sprung one this time, so two questions:

Flyer or B67? The flyer is just a B17 with springs, so since the B17 fits me well it's the obvious choice right? New bike will be flat bars and fairly upright riding position though.

Select or standard? Does anyone have any experience with the select, I suppose they haven't really been about long enough to judge the durability. Worth the extra wedge, or just shameless market segmentation?

  • I would guess the Select would last longer, being thicker than the standard, though also a longer break in period. And apparently made from happier cows. Stay with the shape that works.

  • I'm going to continue plugging this good deal on Brooks Specials on 3 for 2 until two of you lot sign join with me to group buy!

  • Ouch. My poor fucking barse.

I've been on a second hand B17 for about a year with no problem. It didn't even need breaking in, but since January it's been slowly punishing my barse/gooch area. Not the sitbones at all.

All signs point to sagging I guess so I might see if I can get one of these patented stamp and nip/tuck operations. Do any of you recognise this phenomenon of a Brooks going from comfy to "kick in the taint"?

  • Tried tightening the bolt at the front?

  • You may consider getting a very sharp scalpel, and using it to cut out the gooch area that is causing you trouble. You may need to keep off the bike for a couple of weeks while it heals.

  • Or alternatively, I think I have a spare brooks spanner thing if you need it.
