I'd love to come along on this ride.
It'll be my first long ride, and i'd be doing it fixed. Do you think that's a bad idea?
Guess i can fit in some long ish rides before then. -
• #29
Come ! I think give it a go pops1207....I think the key is to have an understanding/appreciation about how long it's going to take you to do 50 odd miles and be cycling for however long that's going to take you.
If it helps, I'm guessing it's going to be a fairly steady/sedate pace, with plenty of stops. I'd say actual cycling time would be about 4-5 hrs. Does that sound right to other people?

Hey, Ladies to brighton would be great... but not the bank holiday! I'll be in Canada still.... I voted on your survey, anyday but not the bank holiday!!!!!
Can I ask though why you want to go the Ditchling route? I did it last year geared and it's not the most pleasant, although the downhill (after Ditchling) into Brighton is alright.
I want to hear about the avoiding Ditchling route.... can someone send me that?
-
• #31
Or is that the ladies route from last year? It looks like it goes up Ditchling... though I just followed everyone on the ride to Brighton I did last October...
-
• #32
To be honest, would you not get that sense of achievement if you don't do Ditchling? I mean Ditchling was a great way to end the ride to Brighton, by the time you get up there, all you can see is Brighton and the lovely feeling of the descent to the beach.

Guess i can fit in some long ish rides before then. The only thing i have to say is that there are some massive downhills and if you don't like going fast downhill then consider single speed with two brakes (I fucked up and only had a front brake when I did it) or gears.
-
• #34
Or two brakes with fixed, make spinning light work on the descent,
-
• #35
Not if you're afraid of downhills. I would end up so far behind everyone! Coasting ss allowed me to keep up.
-
• #36
Sounds as though i'd probably be best off switching to ss for this ride. I've got two brakes anyway, so that would be fine.
My worry wasn't primarily the downhill - more getting up the uphill, which i guess depends on the route we take!Hoping to be carnivalling on the bank holiday, but if scheduled on another date i'll keep the date free!
Thanks for all the advice! -
• #37
If you haven't voted yet and don't want it to be the bank holiday could I steer you towards the 1st October, lovely ladies (and men who are lovely to ladies...)
I can do all the dates but have my heart set on the 1st.

I am really good at this route. It involves a massive dual carriageway and an extremely high puncture risk. You do go fast but I do not recommend it. I've only ever done it (about 15 times) by accident.
I never have any idea what I am doing so I'll wait for you guys to sort a date and then work stuff out.
Would anyone be up for a night ride to Brighton on a separate occasion? I am all about the night rides this week.

the other way (avoiding a23) is devil's dyke. still a tough climb, but no ditchling. nice views if you carry on right up to the pub at the top.

me and steve skive have been talking about this, but not set a date.

oh yeah, I forgot about that one. Still, where's the fun in that? No crippling hill AND no high risk of death. What's the point. Apart from the pub.

OK, you are not quite as ladylike as I was aiming for but I suppose you'll do. If you wear a skirt.
-
• #43
I'm not terribly ladylike but probably look better than smiff in a skirt - is debatable though. The point I'm labouring is that I'd be up for a night ride also.
Looks like 1st October is currently leading...
-
• #44
I've voted for 1st October too, as it's the only one I can do.
I have another couple of rides in the diary, and my family will be really cheesed off if I keep not being there to cook the dinner, do the ironing, go to the shops, hang out the washing and all the other chores that I go cycling to escape from.
-
• #45
Doing London to Paris soon so would be good training not sure about the dates though.....
-
• #46
I'm going to Hospitality at Brixton the night on the 30th September, so unlikely that i'll make the 1st October ride as not the best idea to do it extremely tired/having had no sleep.
If the 2nd ends up winning then i'll come along, but i'm up for a night ride also, so if that wasn't on a school night i could do that instead.

Eeeyyy! And stuff La Famille. You get some exercise/fun/day out and they learn how to be a bit more self sufficient.
Right...have decided I need to be a be more proactive about My First Ride, and would quite like to make a bit more of an effort.
How do you go about doing a recce of the route? I mean, I know you get and cycle it yourself before hand, and you can follow a map blah blah blah but if you haven't got a fancy Garmin, how do you do it? Just make yourself a route crib sheet, with OS map to back up?
-
• #48
yup. a computer that does distance only is remarkably useful for following crib sheets too, so if you know it's a couple of miles til the next turning you can just keep an eye on that.
-
• #49
I don't even have one of those. Are they worth investing in?

I would be up for this.
I'd love to do this ride if I can fit it into my diary!
